America’s Surgeon General Is A HAES Rock Star

October 5th, 2010

We’ve spoken a lot about Health At Any Size, the myth of the fat lazy person and why BMI is bogus so it does my heart good to see an official stamp of approval from the government. Check it: “…We can be healthy and fit at any size or any weight.”

While Dr. Benjamin isn’t coming right out as a fat advocate, she definitely takes a shot at the media for its doom and gloom finger pointing at the fat rampage so-called obesity epidemic. The winds of change are blowing, BFDivas and BFDudes!

So pleased. So <3 Dr. Benjamin. Having a brief but beautiful flashback to another African-American woman doctor talking sense from this position–anyone of you young folks remember Dr. Jocelyn Elders? I've never forgotten her common-sense position masturbation, or that it cost her her job. May the times be changing for the better!

I love this. It’s so great to see that there is a message out there that isnt’ “DIET” but “go toward health.” I’m hoping that the climate around the diet mentality is changing.

Let’s see how long this smart, brave woman lasts in her job, when what she has to say is so obviously sensible and intelligent…and SO at odds with the uninformed opinions of the fatphobic Mrs. Obama.

      You know …
I’m sure I’m in the minority on this one, and I do think she may not have the optimal amount of empathy about variant body shapes, because she’s been an athlete all her life (and shaped by the things that beat any high-achieving Western woman about the head, with additional pressures being a woman of color), but …

I’m not sure I’d lay all the atrocities of Monsanto and the other Big Ag lobbies, and what they’ve contributed to fatphobic culture, at her feet.
They’ve been sneaking crap into our food and leaching nutrients out of it looooong before her husband even contemplated being President.

I didn’t think I would be hearing what I heard when I went to click play on the video. I’m really happy to see and hear that. A step in the right direction agreed. Now lets see how far the government will go to invest in what the surgeon general talks about

WOW!! This is really HUGE I think. I am so pleased that someone in the upper ranks is understanding this.
