Beth Ditto On The Runway

October 4th, 2010

Beth Ditto recently walked the runway in a Jean Paul Gaultier show, and she looks fabulous.

Gaultier is, of course, the same designer who used Velvet D’Amour in a previous runway show. More pictures at HuffPo, where they pair the slideshow with this recent quote from Ditto:

“It’s really interesting to me that people will look at a thin person and go, ‘That’s a healthy person’. I want to go, ‘Come open my refrigerator and look and then let’s talk about what you think is so bad’. To be thin and to stay really thin, sometimes…some people literally do coke all the time. Some people smoke cigarettes instead of eating. That’s crazy. But that’s ‘okay’ because you look healthier.”

Thanks to Christina for the link! And thanks to Beth, and Jean Paul Gaultier, for being awesome.

I think that dress looks like roadkill, personally, but she’s rockin’ it. There’s a photo from the show with Ditto and Gaultier (he’s holding a bouquet of roses). They look like they’re having so much fun.

I think she looks awful, honestly. Her legs look great, but the outfit is hideous and makes her look like a dead rodent.

But, nonetheless I’m happy to see her up there!

The outfit is horrendous. Her legs…well, I can only wish I had such gams.

The quote about the fridge: absolutely priceless. Truer words were NEVER spoken!

I want to ad some witty cultural commentary, but all I can think is “LEGS!!!!”

Is Gaultier actually going to produce and sell plus size clothes? Or is he just showing them on the runway?

    Also, love the fridge comment.

I like the picture in that link much better. Maybe it’s because I’m not a fan of the makeup she’s wearing in the crazy getup above? I think the bodice is too distracting.

Between the eye makeup and the outfit, she looks horrible. As would anyone, thin or fat, in the same getup. Ugh.

You know what else is really great about this photo? She’s smiling. Exuding happiness and vitality and confidence. Unlike most runway models, who typically look scornful, frail, and/or deeply unhappy to be there.

This just shows how unreasonable people have become:

“Some people smoke cigarettes instead of eating. That’s crazy. But that’s ‘okay’ because you look healthier.”

Curvy women are beautiful and healthy too.

Which is, of course, completely different from saying that fat people eat nothing but junk food, right?

    Right?

    • Agnes, on November 10th, 2010 at 4:32 pm Said:

      Yes, Richard, that’s right.

The difference lies in the words “SOMETIMES … SOME people” – it doesn’t generalize to all thin people like your statement about fat people does. If you said that “sometimes … some fat people eat nothing but junk” or if she said “think people do coke to stay really thin” – then you’d have a point.

I think she looks awesome. I like that crazy mess of an apron. Beth Ditto is one of those people, in my opinion, can do no wrong. I am so glad she exists. I used to feel like “if I lost weight” now I feel like “If only I could rock more”. That’s a pretty great way to start the day.
