Recommend A Crossbody Bag
Yes, it’s a BFD post! I’m hoping to get back into posting more regularly, and to that end, going through a slight backlog of e-mailed questions. Thanks for your patience (and feel free to re-send anything you’d like an answer to). Today’s question comes from Melissa, who writes:
I need a cute crossbody bag for a reasonable price and can’t find any with long enough straps. I’m not a small girl and have boobs that are beyond big…lol. Have you found any place to get purses with longer straps?
I too love the crossbody bag, and I am always looking for one with long enough straps! I have a great one, but it’s from a chocolate shop in Vienna, randomly enough, and it doesn’t seem to be available in the U.S. So, does anyone have a great bag with long straps to recommend?

I really like the bags by Kipling. They make a lot of cross body styles and sizes, and most of them seem to have an adjustable strap so you can make the bag sit where you want it to.
Their messenger is super cute but if I’m reading it right, the strap is only 22″? That seems super short.
I have two handbags from Cha Cha handbags. She makes all her stuff out of recycled leather, and the straps on the bags I have are really long. I have one like this but in a different color and that strap is HUGE. Plus, she’s a small operation and might be up for a custom order.
I’ve been using a Medium Cafe Bag from Tom Bihn for years and the strap is pretty long and adjustable– website says its max length is 54″. Hope this helps!
I have a small messenger bag from Sherpani that has a good long strap. It’s pretty old, though, so I don’t know if their current bags are the same.
Another vote for the Tom Bihn cafe bags. Their stuff is indestructible, and the straps are nice and long.
For a nicer bag, I’m a big Coach fan, but their crossbody bags are too short. Last week I wandered into a Coach MEN outlet, and lo and behold – fantastic crossbody bag in basic black leather, and the strap is long enough. Apparently the boys get more/sturdier interior pockets too. It was $179 at the outlet, but given how well my other Coach bags have lasted, I’ll still be using it and looking good when I’m 60.
I recently bought a Namaste Mini Messenger, it’s a generous purse-size messenger, they also offer a full size messenger. I’m 5’8″, about 325lb and wear size 22-ish. Cross body bags usually end up cutting my neck on one side while riding in the opposite armpit. This bag has a long enough strap to hang down to my low hip if I want it to! Also, very well made from vegan fake leather and comes in pretty colours.

I’ve been using my Truckette from Queen Bee for possibly going on four years now, so I feel like the hundred bucks I paid for it was well worth it. (We’re talking daily commuting use, it still looks great, I got a complement just the other day.) (I’m 6′ and have a 23ish top, I have plenty of room in this bag.)
They just added a couple of new canvas bags, I might buy one.

Another recommendation for Queen Bee – they’re not cheap-cheap, but I’ve yet to find another vegan bag that’s lasted this long (something like 8 years and counting, at this point, and a few of them have been of the daily commute variety.)
If price is a hard constraint, you can also look for bags with metal loops for the strap, and then buy a replacement (QB has this one, but I’m sure others are available online, too: http://www.queenbee-creations.com/items/367)
I miss posts from here! Do come back!
I’m not sure how long of a strap you need, but FWIW this crossbody bag is my life:

It’s awesomely huge, gorgeous, people comment on it all the time, and i don’t have to carry it with my hands!

I have leather one from Fossil that I like a lot and has a pretty long strap… I’ve had it for a few years, and I don’t see it on zappos anymore, but it might be worth checking out their current styles.
Before that I used a Hipster from Vera Bradley that was long enough and I liked pretty well, but the snap on it started to pull out of the fabric after using it for a few years.
A friend of mine has a company that makes bags called Reign Vermont. She makes great bags in a multitude of sizes. You can have the straps customized as well as pockets and fabric choices. They are super durable and really cute. They cost 25-80 each.

I also have a leather cross body from roots.ca. I love it, and it holds just the right amount.
Thanks you guys–I got a check from my in-laws for my birthday and I am totally going to order the Tom Binh bag.
(I also have a Queen Bee bag, and it’s terrifically cute.)
Tom Bihn makes a very cool knitting bag. Now I wish I hadn’t looked at their site. Oops.
I had the Sherpani bag, and the one thing I didn’t like was that the strap would slide towards my neck, and since it was nylon that had been heat-melted, it was sharp.
I just bought this bag from Duluth Trading – http://www.duluthtrading.com/store/mens/mens-accessories/mens-bags-briefcases/43129.aspx – it’s fire hose canvas with leather trim. It’s listed as a ‘man bag’, but I don’t find it to be heavily gendered. I love that the canvas is soft, so the strap is soft *and* has a leather shoulder pad that doesn’t slip on my shoulder. It’s a *really* long strap too.
Pockets? OMG pockets. Three middle zip compartments with pockets, It’s more than big enough for my Kindle, my knitting, my wallet, pens, phone, iPod, charging cords, a protein bar, whatever. LOVE this bag.
Look for extra long straps on Ebay and then buy a bag with clipped on straps, rather than sewn in straps and you can replace whatever straps the purse comes with. I have an affinity for vintage Coach purses and I have bought several from this seller.

I found one at H&M. Can’t wear a damn thing from that store except their bags, and it was under $25! Two open pockets and one zipper pocket on the inside, none on the outside, one long strap and two short handheld straps.
I just got this cute Disney Nerds bag at Disneyland this January. It was only $20 and the strap is super long. If you like that sort of thing, it’s great. I think they have it at Disney Store as well, but the site is down now so I can’t check. There were NO plus size shirts or jackets at the Land this trip. Really disappointing.
