Got Lies?

May 18th, 2007

The dairy industry’s commercials about drinking milk, claming that it would help you lose weight, have been pulled by the FTC. According to the petition:

Only one researcher–who has a financial stake in the outcome–showed a statistically significant effect of dairy product consumption on weight loss and only when paired with a strict caloric restriction… Dr. Michael Zemel has a financial stake in the dairy industry because he has received grants from the National Dairy Council, as well as from the breakfast cereal and yoghurt industries, to conduct his studies. In addition, he allegedly holds a US patent for the method of using calcium or dairy products to treat and prevent obesity.

The website that used to have all those pictures of skinny milk glasses looks like it has been pulled. (Here’s the 404 error.) The Wayback Machine helpfully assures me that the page used to claim:

Including 24 ounces of lowfat or fat free milk every 24 hours in a reduced calorie diet provides calcium and protein to support healthy weight loss.

I don’t know. Throw in that “in a reduced calorie diet” thing, and isn’t that true of anything? If you reduce the calories in your diet, mini-Snickers bars can help you lose weight. Why not, right?

I don’t know. I have noticed that when I drink 3-4 glasses of milk a day, I have an easier time of eating healthy. It may not be the “end all, be all” that the ads claim, but I’m sure that it can’t hurt to get your calcium in on a daily basis!

Regarding the false advertising. All food groups do this. Margerine was better than butter awhile back. Now it’s THE DEVIL b/c of saturated fats. You never used to be able to eat eggs b/c of the cholesterol. Now they say that eggs are fine….that they won’t hurt you. Every year or 2, there is a new medical study that contradicts one of the old ones. Just wait a few more years and the pendulum will swing back.

If I ate every single thing that said I HAVE to have every day, I’d be twice the size I am.

I meant TRANS fats with margerine (I know I’m not spelling it right. It’s Monday!!!)
