Yes, But Can She Do A Salchow?
My friend Geowench posted an entry today that made me feel proud and happy.
It seems he’s chosen me to do this exhibition (instead of a more advanced/accomplished skater) because of my special status as having lost weight. He always calls me a “testimony.” (He’s Russian and doesn’t always express himself all that well.) Now I’m 40 years old and I’m still a fattish woman. I have no problems with being an example of “Anyone can skate and anyone can be fit, come on down to the rink and get some exercise.” But I’m worried that he’s going to go on and on about how much weight I’ve lost and how wonderful it is. And I’m profoundly uncomfortable with being held up as a paragon of weight loss, because 1) I’ve gained a bit back and would not be surprised if I gain more back, even if I continue with this level of activity, and 2) it’s none of anyone’s frakkin’ business how much weight I’ve lost or gained and can’t we focus on the damn skating instead?! and 3) I guess I just don’t think it’s such a goddamn crime to be fat.
Amen to that, sister. Good luck with the skating!

This is awesome! Best of luck to her.
(Psst… Did you mean to link to an Aug 2007 BFD post, instead of Geowench?)
I meant to refer to both. Fixed now! Thanks!

You go, Geowench, you freaking go!
