All Publicity Is Good Publicity?

December 5th, 2007

Thanks to a post on Sister Skinny, I found this video of a segment on CBS Healthwatch where they talk about “weight loss” blogs kept by “dieters.” The very first blog they show a screenshot of is this one!

Blogging To Lose Weight
Hannah Storm talks to dietician Kerri Glassman about posting your eating and exercise habits on a web site with others to help you maintain your weight loss and share meaningful support.

That’s…. not this blog, of course. Basically, some news-type-person at CBS read the Women’s Health article (the same blogs are featured) and did not actually read this blog. They probably just showed it because it’s so pretty (thank you, Amy). Still, our tiny little faces were on the TV!

    *Sigh*

Thanks for reminding me of how my major of choice (Journalism) is basically driven by the work of morons. At least I can comfort myself and remember that I’m not a broadcast major, not that the health sections of print news outlets are much better.

Oh well, I can always go full on Lit Major before the four years are up, if I get desperate.

Yes, dis blog is beautiful. I have sort of a management question, tho: if people did come ’round posting Lookit My Oxygen And Celery Diet, what would happen? I have been around here long enough to know that said person would find encouragement on how to eat and move and live, but is this an absolutely non-diet blog like Shapely Prose (which is where I came from)?

Heh. Well, of course a blog with fat in the title is about weightloss. Duh! What else would it be?

That’s hilarious. Talk about incompetent and inept journalism at its finest – and from a major broadcast network, to boot.

Personally, I think there is a not-so-fine line between most diet blogs and pro-ana sites. Don’t get me wrong; anorexia is a disease and pro-ana sites advocate deadly and dangerous means, which most diet sites stop short of. But I also think most diets are really just code for disordered thinking about food.

Phledge, that’s an interesting question, and we recently had a discussion about where BFD lies (at the \intersection fo weight loss blogs and fat acceptance blogs). If someone had an Oxygen and Celery diet I am sure we would point out that it’s not sustainable and basically insane. But I personally want to be welcoming to people at all stages of the body positivity movement, including those people who feel they want to lose weight. Does that answer the question at all?

You guys are kind of a gateway blog to the FA community! That’s how I think of you anyway.

Congrats again, Mo pie! You deserve the publicity – even if it’s occasionally unintended.

I’ve really been spending a lot of time on the FA blogs of late. Today, I’ve been in a panic about my body. Instead of vowing to lose X number of pounds, I’m reflecting on what’s going on in my life. The answer came to me. I’m grieving because I learned a week ago that I’ll have to euthanize the puppy I adopted in October from the SPCA. I’m really, really sad about it. Instead of coping and working through it, I defaulted to the body-hating stand-by. I can’t control the birth defects that are killing my puppy, so I MUST control my body.

I wouldn’t have made the connection if I hadn’t been nesting here.

I like that description Spins! When I first started searching the web to find a site that didn’t think having some extra pounds on you was going to kill you, I ended up at Big Fat Blog. I tried to join their community twice, but to no avail. Even inquiring with emails wondering why I couldn’t join in. Perhaps my attitude wasn’t militant enough??? I don’t know.

Anyhow, I’ve since given them up and found your website. I feel much more welcomed and at home (fluffily like) here! Keep up the great work, whatever this blog is intended to be!

Aqua – Sometimes emails sent to Paul at Big Fat Blog get caught in what he calls his overzealous spam filter. I’ve sent emails to him before and he hasn’t responded and it wasn’t because he was ignoring me. I obviously can’t speak for him here, but I’d like to give him the benefit of the doubt.

Cindy — I am SO sorry to hear about your puppy. That must be so incredibly painful for you. On the days when you are feeling especially sad and down, please think of this: think of how lucky your puppy is that you adopted him and how lucky you are that you have gotten to know him, even though his allotted time here on earth is very short. How blessed your puppy is that he is with you for the rest of his little life, rather than dying in the animal shelter. And how blessed you are that you have him for this short time. My heart goes out to both of you.
