Plus-Sized Outerwear
There’s a girl on the campus where I teach who wears the CUH-yutest sweater. I asked her where she got it and she went on at length about how her family had finally gotten her a decent gift for her birthday this year, hallelujah! It was a cute conversation, but a cuter sweater. And I thought, well, clearly these people know something I don’t know. But I’ve got a posse, so one of you guys will know where to get a cute sweater, right?
This one was long and coat length, with two buttons on the chest and that was it, with a delightful ribbed knit and a hood. Looked incredibly cozy. So the sweater I’m thinking of is an outerwear-type sweater, to be worn in lieu of a hoodie or a jacket, or layered under a jacket when it’s extra cold. And as I was thinking “hmm, I should ask BFD about this…” I got this email from LoLa:
I love BFD and have been reading it for some time now. Anywho, with winter upon us, I am realizing that I need a real winter coat (I have just worn sweatshirts for years but they just don’t do it). As a fellow plus-size girl, I am concerned about finding a coat that looks good on me. I’m dying for a pea coat, but I hear that they don’t usually look good on bigger girls. If you have any suggestions of how to go coat-shopping, and perhaps some stores that carry good plus-size coats (not just online stuff would be good, because trying it on is a must), I would love to see a blog post on this topic!! I’m sure lots of girls would, since it’s getting colder
Serendipity, right? So, it’s winter (at least in this hemisphere) and we need sweaters and coats that are cute and fashiony and awesome. What have you found lately for us to run out and buy and wrap ourselves up in? I have my credit card at the ready.
Oh, and I’ll kick it off: LoLa, I just saw this plus-sized coat at Target… I have to say it looked completely different (and cuter) at the store. And also, who says you can’t wear a pea coat? NOBODY, THAT’S WHO. This one’s cute!
(Actually there’s a whole conversation about plus-sizes and pea coats at Metafilter, of all places. “I had one that I loved, but once when I was holding an umbrella someone told me I looked like Paddington Bear.”)

We just tackled this topic this week – with a budget of $100 or less:
http://www.fatgirlsguidetoliving.com/2009/11/24/ask-fgg-where-can-i-find-flattering-plus-size-winter-coats/
Curious to see what your readers come up with; I’ve been searching for a cute plus-size coat for eons but don’t want to pay $250. I have a parka I love for outdoorsy stuff but nothing stylish. Yet.
I wear a peacoat 8 months out of the year (four of those months with a hoodie under it, and a scarf, and a hat). But I live in Oregon and I commute via public transit; the wool keeps me warm even when it’s wet. In a world of windbreakers and ski jackets, my peacoat stands out.
(I also spent $250 on it, from Lane Bryant, but it’s going into its third season and I expect to get another three out of it.)
I heart my purple pea coat. If you are dying for one, get one! Ignore the people with the rude Paddington Bear comments. Unfortunately I don’t have shopping advice, because I found mine at a thrift shop.
Of course, you may not wish to take my advice. I also sometimes wear clothing other than giant black shapeless sacks, despite “fashion advice” telling me I can’t wear anything fun or colorful. Once, I even bought – omg – a sweater with *horizontal stripes*.
I found my bestest wool winter coat at Dillard’s eons ago. My second bestest winter coat is the stadium squall parka from Lands’ End. It’s not elegant or particularly chic, but it does the job perfectly and is super-comfy.
Junonia.com has great winter gear for the plus size set! A great place to shop, though pricey.
I didn’t know i wasn’t supposed to wear a pea coat. I love my pea coat: it’s grey and i paired with a darker grey silk scarf. Tres cute i thought! *sigh* Oh well, i was never in fashion.
I have three pea coats, and love them each to pieces. I have a black one, a red one and a brown one, and to hell with the Paddington Bear comment! I feel so much more put-together when I walk out the door in one of those babies!
I have gotten all of mine at either Target or Old Navy, and they weren’t cheap, but they are also going on their second or third year of wear and are worth every penny. I have also seen some very cute ones recently at Lane Bryant, and if I was looking to upgrade or replace this year, would have gotten the grey and blue plaid one in about two seconds!
I am partial to Lands’ End. I ignore all their fleece options generally, and go for the wool. They always have a good selection of coats in their plus-sized lines. Here is an example:
http://www.landsend.com/pp/WoolPeaCoat~187680_57.html?bcc=y&action=order_more&sku_0=::BLA&CM_MERCH=IDX_00007__0000001029&origin=index
I like it in red.
Also, if you sign up for Land’s End emails, they very often have free shipping deals. And, if you don’t like something, you can return it to Sears if you don’t want to ship it back. Their return policy makes returns easy.
I’ll second Land’s End. I dislike peacoats on me (I really don’t think they’re all that flattering on bigger boobed ladies, plus sized or not, but everyone’s body is different), but I own this down coat from LE and it got me through a New England winter quite comfortably:

They go up to a 3X (which seems to be around a 26 US).
I am a jacket WHORE! I love them and my favorite I found was at Target! I am still daydreaming about it! Dammit… I Should have got it…
Nordstrom has some cool ones: http://shop.nordstrom.com/C/6007113/0~2376776~2374327~6007059~6007113?origin=6016058_Select+a+Category6016058
There are sales plus additional discounts on these:
I own this coat and love it. It’s lightweight, though, so if you are looking for something to handle really cold temps, this is probably not what you want. It looks great on. I have it in black:

I also own this coat. I’ve had it for at least 2 years and I love it. Yes, it is a Paddington Bear coat, but mine is the cinnamon color and I adore it. It’s very warm and well-made. I’ve gotten many compliments on it.

Oh, and you were talking about sweaters that could be worn as a coat?
I kinda like this one:

this one:

and this one:

And out of left field, I saw this dress that would be great for New Year’s or a nice dinner. I hate my upper arms, so when I see a pretty dress that has some sleeves, I spread the word. It’s only $48.00, comes in black, RED, and peacock:

Edit for above – sorry, the second sweater should open to this:

Sorry about the duplicate link.
What’s wrong with looking like Paddington Bear? He’s adorable and so are peacoats!
No helpful links, just had to say: peacoats are completely awesome, and I have never seen one look bad on anyone, regardless of size. I am a big girl, and I have a weirdly shaped body, and one of the only things I feel truly cute in is my black wool peacoat. It’s also the article of clothing I get the most compliments on.
Peacoats are so cute looking. But I’m so much more of a hoodie type chick.
Peacoats not for fatties? Please. That’s weak sauce.
For me, the key is that I think peacoats look silly on ALL humans without a scarf. You have to wear some form of scarf with it! Otherwise your neck looks naked.
I’ve been pretty much living in a really pretty 100% cotton “plummy mummy” hooded sweater from Old Navy, size 4X. I would like to have a decent winter coat, but fitted coats don’t fit well over my back or my arms. Fitted coats don’t account for fat rolls or short arms. Another way the garment industry fails fat people.
Anyway, here’s a link to the sweater I like: http://oldnavy.gap.com/browse/product.do?cid=50398&vid=1&pid=670406&scid=670406022
(Of course, it’s longer than the picture shows. It also lacks pockets, which I miss. The yarn kind of pills, leaving purple fuzzies all over the place, but it’s soft and comfy and not acrylic, which I can’t stand.)
I recently found an absolutely fabulous black and white plaid belted peacoat at Dressbarn.. I had to buy it cuz I’ve never tried a coat that fit me so well before and it’s absolutely adorable.
Um, totally nothing wrong with peacoats. I just picked one up at Target, http://www.target.com/Merona-Plus-Peacoat-Red/dp/B002BFN4K0/ref=br_1_6?ie=UTF8&frombrowse=1&searchView=grid5&searchNodeID=15657761&node=15657761&searchRank=salesrank&searchPage=1&searchSize=30&id=Merona%20Plus%20Peacoat%20Red, (although mine was an awesome green rather than the red – they didn’t have the green online), and it looks great. I’ve gotten tons o’ compliments. Plus, when I went to my bowling league the other night, I ran into a girl from one of the other teams wearing the exact same coat. She loves it too.
I have the coat from the post in purple and I have never gotten so many compliments on a coat.
Ah I’m so excited to see my email responded to so quickly!! Thank you, Mo, and everyone who has commented. I actually found a nice sort-of peacoat (I don’t think it technically was) at Torrid the other day, and though I didn’t buy it because the only one in my size had a missing button, I have to say, it didn’t look bad at all!! It is online here http://www.torrid.com/torrid/store/product.jsp?FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302036117&PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524442211405&bmUID=1259448154939
LoLa –
I would have asked for a discount on the coat, then gone to my nearest craft store to buy replacement buttons. :-)
I am never good at following through with such activities haha, so I likely would have been walking around with one less button forever :) I’m glad I didn’t buy it though cause I found out it was partly made of wool and I don’t like wearing animal materials
I got my winter coat at Burlington Coat Factory. It’s an ankle-length gray wool… something, I don’t know what the style’s called, but I got it so my knees would have more protection (arthritis pretty much everywhere, but the knees get cold fast and start a flare). It was $110, but I swear I’ve seen it other places for $300+. It’s BEAUTIFUL and WARM and I LOVE IT. So if you have a Burlington, I highly recommend it! Also, I know for a fact it was available past a size 20, I just didn’t try those on as I’m an 18/20.
I have always worn a peacoat, even at my heaviest. And I rock the look. :)
I got a new one this year since my old one was all pilled and cat hairy and it had seen better days.
This is as close as I can find. It has a smaller collar and no belt.

i found my pea coat at ross it was only 25 dollars and i simply adore it..it is checkered and there were many more.. they go up to a size 3x and i dont think they make people look fat…”dont let the haters keep you from doing your thang!”
