Qristyl On Project Runway
It’s Project Runway night, and we still haven’t talked about who we love (Shirin for the win, people) or plus-sexy designer Qristyl Frazier. She was featured before the season on Tom and Lorenzo’s blog and Fat and Fab Chic, where Fabby said:
I absolutely love this show, it is definitely among my top five on my can’t miss TV list. I love the creativity and vision that each designer brings to the show. Watching them create always ignites my passion for fashion on a whole new level. I always wished I possessed the skill to create fashion masterpieces of my own. But since I do not, I always watch in envy of the designs the contestants conceptualize and create. This season I feel I have a whole new reason to watch. I am a champion of designers who don’t shun the idea of creating art for a larger canvas, so to speak. I hope her presence in some small way will bring some inspiration to plus size fashion.
In the first episode, Qristyl said, “I don’t call it plus-sized, I call it plus-sexy!” Although I can’t help but love the sentiment, as the Project Rungay boys pointed out:
Can we just say, that from a former copy editor’s perspective that drives Tom completely nuts? It makes no sense. If she had said “I don’t call it plus-sized, I call it SEXY-sized,” THAT makes perfect sense. And a cute little tagline. “Plus-sexy?” That doesn’t mean anything.
You can see Qristyl’s second design here. I liked the second a lot better than the first, although I still don’t think she’s as talented as my girl Jessica Biffi. Have you guys been watching the show? What do you think of the designers so far?

While I LOVE that there’s a plus sized designer on the show, who designs plus sized clothing, beyond that, I’m not really liking Qristyl.
Personally, I am LOVING Louise Black, in episode one I had this feeling of “dear god her designs look really familiar.” Turns out she’s an Etsy seller, of the far to expensive for me sort, and I’d seen some of her stunning corsets while searching the site.
Qristyl is actually really good, I like that she has such confidence in her body. Not every designer needs to be a bag of bones.
I want to love Qristyl, but based on her first design and her own personal clothing choices, I am worried she’s going to produce a lot of Lane Bryant-esque mainstream large print type stuff, and that would bum me out. However, I remain hopeful!
I second DaniFae. I have yet to be impressed by Qristyl but the competition is still young. I still love Korto from the previous season and was so disappointed when she lost out AGAIN to a second-rate designer in the Masters show. In this season so far, I’m really like Shirin and the older woman, whose name I forget off-hand.
Loving Shirin and Louise.
I don’t care who wins as long as Mitchell gets off my TV ASAP. Two weeks in a row he’s sent out wretchedly made clothes. The one last week was cute enough as a concept (faint praise, faint praise, damn, damn, damn!) but was crap construction-wise. The one the week before…when he was making his ideal version it looked like a nightgown I would have considered too dowdy and old-fashioned to wear as an elementary-school-age Victoriana nut. What he sent his model out in was a travesty. Both times he blamed everyone and everything but himself. It’s the model’s fault for being HUUUUUUGGEE! It’s not my fault because I’ve never made maternitywear! Never mind the fact that another contestant has said Mitchell had a leg up in the challenge because HE’D DONE MATERNITYWEAR BEFORE.
Malvin’s maternity outfit was a kind of scary concept, but a) it was beautifully made, b) it showed imagination, and c) he accepted responsibility for what he’d created. I was actually really intrigued to see what he would come out with next.
All that said, the most important thing is that TIM “I SWALLOWED THE OED” GUNN IS ON MY TELEVISION AND I CAN’T WAIT FOR MORE TIM GOODNESS! Call me, Tim! I’ll bake scones!
Qristyl? I’m withholding final judgement of her talent, but so far she hasn’t wowed me. I’m a bit worried about her taste level. I really thought the concept of the first one wasn’t at all bad, but her fabric choices and construction weren’t up to her imagination. I hope she proves me wrong, but I won’t hold my breath.
Mmmm….Tim time in just a few hours. He’s totally my imaginary gay celebrity boyfriend.
Spoilers for tonight’s episode ahead! Stop reading if you haven’t seen it!
I was so happy with the outcome. I love Ra’mon and Mitchell clearly wasn’t even taking the competition seriously. (The editing totally fooled me, though, because I was sure Ra’mon was getting the classic loser’s edit.)
As for the other bottom team, I thought Epperson was being kind of a domineering ass. If anyone on that team deserved to go home, it definitely was not Qristyl. I didn’t love their designs, though.
I loved Shirin’s team’s blue gown, and I love love LOVED Irina and Johnny’s (is that right) first outfit, with the macrame back and the sheer T and the pocketed skirt… so cute and adorable. LOVE.
I’m seconding/thirding the above sentiments about not being all that wowed by Qristyl. I don’t like her fabric choices; it’s like they’re too shiny or something. (Maybe they look better in person?) Also I have a bad feeling that the satiny blue dress she had on tonight was something she made, and it looked sort of homemade. It made the think of something that Ethel Mertz would wear, and not in a good way.
Bums me out, because I had high hopes for her.
(Also, the spelling of her name give me a headache…It’s like I stare at it and try to pronounce it, but it doesn’t come out sounding like “Crystal.” This is probably just my own hangup, though.)
Love Sharin and Louise Black, though.

I like her as a person, a little snarky(but semi-accurate), but she’s so energetic. I’m personally rooting for Louise, Althea, and Shirin.
She is truly inspiring in a thousand different ways. And her work is absolutely exquisite, too.
