Old-Timey Celebrity Diet Gossip
From the set of… Pearl Harbor? Eight years ago? Well, I guess Kate Beckinsale just did an interview with SELF and talked about the stars being forced to lose weight, and her resultant dizziness. And they did it to Ben Affleck, too!
“I remember going to the fitting and trying on a few swimsuits for a scene… I felt fairly triumphant. (The costume designer) literally went grey in the face and said, ‘Do you want me to tell you how long you’ve got before this scene is shot?’ By the time I arrived back at my hotel, I’d been faxed an incredibly rigorous gym schedule and a diet.”
The actress tells America’s Self magazine she tried to stick to the diet until she started feeling faint on set – and then she discovered she wasn’t the only star struggling to get thin. She adds, “Thank God for Ben Affleck! He was so candid about the producers doing the exact same thing to him. “Once I realised it was happening to the boys, too… I was able to put it in perspective.”
Old-timey it may be, but it’s an interesting glimpse into the world of Hollywood and how they treat their stars: of both genders.

As someone who works in costumes in a University setting, I am outraged that a designer would do such a thing. Our job is to do our best to make the person the actor is portray the character. If anything our job is also to make the actor confident enough in their own beauty to really do a great job on stage if that is required.
This said, I am still sort of unsurprised, as even theatre designers sometimes do not know what to do if a body does not match the ideal in their minds.
Yeah, and theater is a different world than Hollywood. I NEVER had a theater designer or director ask me to lose weight. When it came to films, whole ‘nother story.
I LOVED costume fittings for stage shows! It was always so much fun to see what they’d created! Film? It was pretty much a nightmare. ‘Cause they were so used to designing for the twigs that anyone with any other kind of body just threw them in a tizzy.
(I also think that theater designers are often allowed to be more creative than film designers.)
And there ARE actors out there who are very honest and will just talk about how they’re hungry all the time, they live on coffee, and just get used to feeling that constant hunger and lightheadedness.
Sad.
This is ridiculous, and the reason why actors go in to fad diets and lose thier health. Let them be themselves, there is no need to be ultra thin, one can still look dashing with proper costumes suiting thier body
