Beth Ditto Is The New Fierce
I had to recycle my favorite Beth Ditto fashion picture, because I have just heard the awesome news that Beth is designing a fashion line for Evans, a size 14-32 retailer in the UK. That’s right, I said designing, all Project Runway and stuff. That definitely sounds like the opposite of a hot tranny mess.
The Gossip star, a firm champion of the larger lady, is refusing to shed the pounds – in return for nearly 200,000 pounds! Beth is poised to sign the mega deal with plus-size retailer Evans to design a range of clothes in sizes 14-32.
We’re told: “She wants to show the world that big girls can have fun with fashion – and stick two fingers up to the size-zero brigade.” Last year, the singer reportedly turned down a design deal with Topshop after criticising their “limited” sizing policy.
Of course I am dying to see what kind of clothes she will design. I’m sure they’ll be daring and fabulous and ferosh. I checked out Evans and they do seem to need her help pretty badly, especially since they are one of these plus-size fashion sites with small-size models on the front page, which always makes me cringe. Plus, some of their clothes might be called a hot tranny mess.
Although they do have something called the Gypsy Cheese Dress, as well as excellent taste in fashion icons.

I dunno, seems to me the models on the front of that website are about a UK size 14, which is (I think) a US size 10. That’s about right for what are (jokingly, I’d say) called ‘plus-size-models’ who are around…
Evans is always a curious mix of great basics and bizarre interpretations of the dorothy perkins lines. 5 years ago they catered to the 40+ market, professional people in the office. Now they’re trying to do both.
What I’ve always detested about plus sized stores is that they make what I call ‘fat girl fashion’ – stuff for fat girls designed by skinny people. I always felt like I looked like a chump in a tent when I put on their clothes. I mean, seriously – horrible necklines nasty cuts and ‘cute’ where I wanted edgy. Urgh.
I shop there more now, but for those afore mentioned basics mostly.
I think it’s like anything – different strokes for different folks. I like most of what Evans carries in the store – at least what’s in my local chain, anyway. Most of my favorite, most complimented-on clothes have come from there (though I usually wait ’till they hit the clearance rack, ‘cuz I be poor). But I can’t wait to see what Beth comes out with. There are times I want to be just normal “cute” and there are times I want to be FUNKY. And Beth? Is the absolute DEFINITION of funky. :D
Also, I find it a little strange that people are talking about this now, when I blogged about it over a month ago. *shrug*
I think it might just be hitting mainstream gossip rags again at the moment.
I was under the impression that to be a plus-size model you had to be a size 16 or under?
Anyhoos, I am mucho delighted about this range because Evans is totally lacking a lot of the time when it comes to great, fashionable, non-frumpy clothes. Although I am rocking a bright yellow short-sleeved belted mac from Evans at the moment! I heart it.
I agree with Boobsihazdem re: plus size ‘fashion’… I have no doubt (and a recent Evans trip where I tried on some of their Boudoir range of lingerie confirmed this) that the majority of the clothes are designed by slim people. In fact, the basque I tried on was SO ill-fitting that I doubted the designer had ever seen a woman in his life, never mind a plus-size one.
So much of the stuff is flowy and tentlike when I’d rather something form-fitting to show off my awesome rack, and even my ass on occasion :)
However, despite my qualms, I find myself shopping there almost exclusively, there being no alternative here in backwards little Dublin. Ok, so Monsoon do larger sizes but I’m not made of money! And my local New Look doesn’r stock their plus-size range, grr.
Michelle: One tip with the chain stores that have online outlets is to write down the codes of clothes you like online, take it to the ‘normal’ brick and mortar store and get them to order the plus sizes in. Most stores will do this for you. Also Wallis are a nice bet for the higher end of normal, and normally have good quality and cut – they go up to a 24.
I hope that she also makes her line available in the US. Every time I see a picture of her I’m jealous of how badass she always looks.
And P.S. that video? Yeah, the real Christian Siriano is so annoying that even making fun of him makes me want to throw things. lol I love the girl’s reaction, though. “Are you trying to say I look like a transvestite?”
200,000 pounds…that’s like 2.5 million US dollars, right? ;-)
Kidding…
ANyway, that’s very cool.
Thank gawd already. I hope she uses real fat chicks for models. I’m sick of seeing only size 12-14 (maybe 16) models. How the hell is any fat girl supposed to know how something is going to fit her curves if it’s shown in the smallest size and more than likely PINNED to fit the model?!! I wish I could use the Virtual Model thing on websites like alight, size appeal, etc.
Although I love Beth Ditto, I have often questioned her dress sense, there are times when she looks great and times when she appears to be wearing a golden bin liner… However that all aside, like you say Evans could really do with her help.
After years of being forced to shop there, it finally got too much. Losing weight feels far more achievable, than Evans ever getting decent clothes. Beth could save their sorry arses.
I’m from the opposite side of the pond, so the dress mo linked to is causing me all sorts of consternation. What is “Gypsy Cheese”? Why can’t I see the details of the dress even when I tilt my laptop screen to all angles? Why does it look like there’s a pair of legs under the dress, but there’s not a body in the bodice?
i like beth ditto. i hope the clothing line goes well. good luck, girl!!
as for plus size stores, they just piss me off. it’s so hard to find cute, sexy or edgy styles that just arent huge versions of skinny people clothes.
or, worse, you have moo-moo type dresses and outfits that cater to women with no sense of style and/or over 50yrs of age.
I am young. I want fun, flirty, sexy clothes. I dont think I should be denied from dressing like that just kuz I am a size 16. BOOOOO!
The models on the front page looks heavily photoshopped. I do not approve. XP
Yeah, you would never guess it was a plus size shop with those models. It bugs me that even plus size stores with plus size models do so much airbrushing to remove arm fat, rolls, and cellulite. They’re often just as bad as “normal” sized stores.
I hope she doesn’t try to sell that horrible blue bodysuit thing she wore as a design. Alot of people have said, I’m being sizeist. No, it’d look horrible on a thin person too..it’s just bad.
Someone please explain to me, where I’m wrong in pointing out, that it seems Punk is alot about rebelling by having God awful fashion sense?
“hot tranny mess” strong words from an “acceptance” website.
