Madonna's Big Fat Thighs
How did I not know there was a site called Celebrity Body Gossip? Well, there is, and according to them, Madonna hates her “big fat thighs.” Oh, Madonna!
The original story comes from the Daily Mail:
[D]espite a body that belies her 49 years, it seems Madonna is just like every other woman when it comes to hating one part of her body – her thighs. A newly-released video shows the singer bemoaning the ‘big fat thighs’ she inherited from her mother…she is heard on the clip pleading: ‘Don’t show my big fat thighs, whatever you do.’
The footage was shown during an interview on US television. Asked about her remarks, she made light of them, joking: ‘My big Italian thighs. Very proud of them.’ But she added that she was happier with her legs now a new workout schedule had taken effect. ‘My thighs aren’t as chubby,’ she said.
I guess you can say this makes her relatable or something. (Not that we ever need to hear, say, Johnny Depp whinging about his cellulite.) But mostly it’s just depressing that she, of all people, at the age of 49, hasn’t found peace with her body. Another point of view? According to my husband, “she should be more worried about whether people are sick of her.”

It is – I feel so sorry for her. Here is this woman of enormous talent, with a family, security and success – and she’s so mired in self-hatred she can’t enjoy any of it.
(As for your parenthetical, point taken – and I haven’t heard him complaining, but, if Johnny Depp ever wants to show us any parts of his body he has the temerity to be unhappy with, I won’t be complaining. . . )
I actually went over to that site, and (this does NOT surprise me in the least) the celebrities listed are mainly FEMALE……
I can’t say that I feel sorry for Madge….as she’s helped to fuel the fire…..
And, for the most part, you’ll rarely encounter a male celebrity complaining about the size of his thighs…..unless he’s gay (unfortunately, that’s something they have in common with women)….
I’m with your husband. And the honest truth is I AM sick of her. Then again I never was a huge fan. She looks amazing. I’m just tired of looking at her.
For me, this sort of thing undermines her whole ‘strong woman’ stance. If you wouldn’t say it about someone else, don’t say it about yourself. And if she would say that about someone else, well…
And seriously, fuck the papers for feeling the need to chuckle along. There are certainly more legitimate concerns about her appearance they could be taking up, IMHO – for example her frequently deranged fashion choices.
For the record, though, I’d be happy to volunteer to thoroughly check Johnny Depp over if he does become concerned about cellulite. I usually don’t fancy the skinny men, but there are exceptions…
Well, if you see a picture of the “Lucky Star” Madonna next to a picture of the Madonna of today, there is evidence of a lot of plastic surgery.
I love how some people hold Madonna up as a beacon of female empowerment. But you’re right, she’s not even exempt from self-hate, or jumping on the band wagon that all women must hate some part of themselves to be normal or acceptable.
Empowerment or not, without appearing younger than 35, when she’s infact more like 50, Madonna would NOT have a career. Her career centered on her sexuality, and though that may have been her choice, it still stunts her to this day.
I’m surprised she still mentions she’s Italian, with her pretending to be British for the last 10 or so years!
Madonna, you’re 49 hon. Although that is still young, you can’t stay 25 forever, no matter how many hours of exercise you do or trips to the plastic surgeon you take. Embrace your Italian thighs, your pear shape, and the fact that you have been making music for almost 30 years that doesn’t even sustain the careers of singers who have copied or been influenced by you.
Back in the 1980’s, before Madonna hired a personal trainer and became muscle woman, she did have big fat thighs, that is, she looked like a normal woman!
I remember a woman I worked with back then saying that one thing she liked about Madonna was that even though she had fat thighs, she wasn’t afraid to dance around in skimpy costumes.
However, the later version of Madonna has muscular thighs that don’t look fat at all.
Meh, Madonna never struck me as a “strong woman.” Her whole image was “Become strong by making your appearance acceptable to men, who will then want to fuck you!”
So this doesn’t surprise me, even if it’s very say and unfortunate for her.
If you REALLY want a hoot of a crazy celebrity website, check out http://www.theskinnywebsite.com/
If the actual news doesn’t get you, the highly critical comments people leave will.
On the topic of Madonna, I don’t think her thighs are bad.. But if she thinks they are, why continue to parade them about in boy shorts and thigh high boots? Wear something flattering that will make her love them :)
No one is ever happy. She really should be though, plenty of women half her age don’t have such a toned body.
Madonna never struck me as a “strong woman.”
Me either – but I think that’s her schtick: present herself as a ‘tough chick’ with enough edge to be titillating (while still conforming to societal standards about femininity, beauty and acceptable sexuality enough not to be frightening).
Maybe Beth Ditto and Skunk Anansie could go have a wee chat with Madge about empowerment.
er, duh – that should have said “…Skin from Skunk Anansie…” Oops.
Am I the only one who is sick of skinny people saying that they’re fat? She’s fuckin’ lean!! If her thighs are “fat” then I’m a blue whale for chrissakes. Gimme a break.
Based on the outfits Madonna chooses to wear, I have a hard time believing that she is seriously traumatized by the girth of her thighs. I can believe that she might be rather less pleased with them than she would like, but does having a healthy body image necessarily entail thinking that every part of your body is perfect?
She does have a little bit of thunder thighs going on there. But it could just be a bad picture. Still amazing though, but I think its kind of silly that she refuses to play the stuff that got her famous. But I know she is probably tired of it.
Jesus Harold Christ on Rubber Crutches, she’s 49 and has popped out two children!
Also, being one-quarter relatively undiluted Italian myself (my mom’s father was born in Italy), I vouch for the fact that Mediterranean women generally have hips and thighs. So her legs actually touch at the top. Buy some anti-chafing cream and own it.
The thing about being a strong woman, I can see how she might seem like she’s just buying into the “look cute so men want to do you” but if you think about it, she was one of the first young female pop stars to be overtly sexual AND massively successful. By today’s standards she may not seem unique, but 20+ years ago when she emerged she was edgy and different. She was one of very few celebrities to acknowledge that women want to have sex and don’t have to choose between virgin or whore. I mean, remember that she was out in the era of Tiffany and Debbie Gibson (when she was still “Debbie” instead of Deborah), NKOTB, and freakin mall tours.
I don’t really like much of the music she’s put out recently (I think”Ray of Light” might be the newest song of hers I actually like…”Music” was OK but not dazzling, IMO), but I do respect her for being groundbreaking in the past. Fake British accent notwithstanding.
I did get a little sick of seeing pictures of the girl-on-girl-on-girl kiss as the screensaver of ever heterosexual male I know, but at least she was still shocking people.
I like upsetting the status quo.
I’m gay, so I think I might have the Madonna Allegiance Gene.
I think she’s incredible. Even with plastic surgery, I think she works really hard for the body she’s got (and so do a lot of women who can’t and won’t ever look that sinewy.) I think she’s got an incredible business acumen, associates herself with some of entertainment’s highest achievers and has an incredible sense of theatre in her concerts.
I think she’s smart, and I give her a pass for surviving in the business past age 25.
I saw the interview and to be honest, Madonna was NOT complaining about her thighs, it was just a silly funny comment (the type of comment you make underrating yourself just to get a complement).
I think your husband should be more worried about thinking about Madonna’s position in the music bizz and stop making stupid statements because people are not sick of Madonna at all. Evidence: her latest work – Hard Candy and 4 Minutes – is # 1 in over 35 countries, single and album on the top of the world chart for over three weeks, It clearly shows people still like her.
And more important, I would like to see all the people that make bad comments about Madonna. she is 49 (50 in Auguust). I dare all those haters to look better than her not when they’re 49, but now. Before even judging her, you should take a look at yourself in the mirror… can you really say anything about Madonna?
It’s so funny how uneducated people jump into conclusions and judge what they don’t know.
As a linguist, I can say that after living in London for over 8 years, having an English husband and being surrounded by speakers of that dialect, it is totally normal to have certain aspects of your own linguistic performance changed a little bit.
Okay, I get that you like Madonna, but you may want to calm down about it. Sense of humor: it’s what’s for breakfast!
(Troll-like comments deleted. Which might have been a bad idea since they were kind of funny.)
“I get that you like Madonna, but you may want to calm down about it” is my nomination for BFD Tagline.
