Right Fit Jeans
I stopped into Lane Bryant yesterday to get some bras and underwear with the coupon I’d gotten in the mail. If you’ve ever done Lane Bryant coupon math, you might well find yourself in this position: once everything was said and done, if I spent $30 more, I would get $25 off. So I remembered this entry from the Pretty Pear and Rachel and Kate talking about them, and I decided to try the Right Fit jeans.
The salesperson told me that Lane Bryant did a bunch of research into different body shapes to develop this new system of jeans sizing. There are three different styles (Red, Blue, Yellow) depending on your shape. (I gather that their sizing goes higher than it used to, also.) From Elegant Plus:
Instead of using a sizing system and numbers we are all familiar with, Lane Bryant has created a new sizing system from 1 to 8. And from there, they’ve created three shapes which are color coded: a Yellow body type is straight from the waist through the hips; a Red fit is slightly curved from the waist to the hips; and a woman with a Blue body type has a small waist and is fullest at the hips. Finally a variety of inseam lengths are available for petite, average and tall plus-size women.
The salesperson looked at me and said I was probably a Red 2 or a 3. She pulled out the measuring tape to confirm it and ended up throwing me in a dressing room with Red 2’s and 3’s, bootcut and flare, tall and average. I tried on the Red 3 flare average, and I had the exact same reaction as all the other fatshionistas: wow. I’ve been wearing Torrid jeans for a long time, and I love them, but they ride low and gape in the back sometimes and I have a little muffin top. These cinch at my waist perfectly, are the perfect length, and are really flattering. In other words, I love them. And I can’t believe they’re priced at $40; I would definitely pay more, especially since I wear jeans nonstop.
I ended up with two pair (one dark wash, one lighter wash) and of course, my coupon math was off again. If I spent $28 more dollars, I’d get another $25 off! So I picked up a pair of really cute tights to round out my shopping experience. I ended up with two bras, a pile of panties, two pairs of jeans, and the tights for something like $130. Not bad, right?
Anyway, I highly suggest making your way to a Lane Bryant store to be fitted for these jeans. There’s a measurement calculator on their website, but definitely suggest getting measured and trying on a pair in the store so you can see which one fits you the best. Maybe they won’t be magical for you, but they seem to be working out for a lot of people. And don’t forget your coupon! I get a bunch of coupon codes since I’m an “affiliate” (totally not why I’m posting this, by the way). In the sidebar, there’s a 25% off coupon if you spend $75. And if the coupon math is scary, you can get a flat 20% off by clicking here.
More about Right Fit jeans here and here. Man, what took me so long to try these?

I loooooove my Right Fit jeans! I actually slide between Red & Yellow, a different size in each. It’s nice because I have two pairs of jeans that look awesome on me in *different* ways. So I can decide exactly what kind of look I’m going for. I have *never* been able to do that! Two pairs of jeans that fit me so well! Woohoo!
RF jeans are made of 10000000% pure unadulterated awesome. I have three pairs and am just biding my time before i go back and get more. I have never before owned a pair of jeans that made me feel like the hotness of my bootay could conquer worlds.
I picked a two pair a couple of weeks ago, and I love them. Best jeans ever. Also I heard they’re starting to resize their other pants the same way. CAN’T wait.
I think I’m the ONLY person on the planet who hasn’t had a similarly great experience.
I went in a few weeks ago, and was kind of unsure about the blue vs. red.
Once on, the blues fit much better. But there’s such a huge difference between the waist and hip measurements, that they were hard to pull up over my hips.
The reds went on much better, but didn’t fit as well once all the way on.
I was able to get into the blue #3, but it was a titch too tight. The sales girl convinced me to buy the 4s, since they’d “shrink a little in the wash”.
I ended up going home with a light-colored red #5, and a dark-wash blue #4.
I wore the dark blues out the next night. After a ten minute drive to the restaurant, they were a little looser than when I left home.
3 hours later when we finally stood up from the table, I just barely caught them waist of the jeans as they slid totally off my hips and half-way down my butt. They stretched out so big, I’d say they were at least 6 inches larger in the waist than when I bought them.
The reds haven’t stretched out that much, but I’m reluctant to buy any more.
Toni, that’s kind of odd that they told you to get the larger of the jeans because of wash-related shrinkage. Most everyone i’ve talked to about this (including several ladies who work in LB stores) say that because they really do stretch quite a bit, you want to buy something that’s just bordering on too tight. I’m sorry you had a bad experience with them.
My dad works for one of Charming Shoppes’ companies so I get a 40% discount at Lane Bryant. Neener neener.
I’ve never owned more than one pair of jeans at a time in my life, but I’m now the proud owner of three (!!!) pair of Right Fits. My beef with LB is that their other pants seem to be made of crappy material. If I could get sturdy cotton or wool blend pants in Right Fit I would never go anywhere else.
I know not everyone likes Catherine’s, but they carry Right Fit jeans all the way up to a 12 (56″ waist) and they carry a career pant in Right Fit, same sizing. Prices at Catherine’s are $30 – $33, depending on size. I’m calling the Catherine’s in St Cloud to see if they have them in the store and heading over there as soon as I have some extra bucks.
My mom told me these were like miracle jeans. I’m going to have to get myself right over to Lane Bryant now!
Also, for those of you who don’t know this. Lane Bryant, Catherines, and Fashion Bug are all owned by the same company, Charming Shoppes. (www.charmingshoppes.com) This might be why both Catherine’s and Lane Bryant sell the Right Fit Jeans. My guess is Fashion Bug would be selling them too then.
In case you were wondering, I checked Fashion Bug’s website. They seem not to sell the Right Fit jeans. It kind of makes sense though, since they’re targeting a teen market, which would want to wear some trendy name brand over comfort.
Damn, those sound incredible. I need new jeans, so maybe I’ll manage to mosey over to LB and try some on.
I am all sorts of excited about these… One of my bestest friends in the world is coming to visit and her favorite passtime is shopping… I’m sure I’ll end up with a pair or two of these in the next week or so… not to mention I get a $50 gift cheque in my email at least every three days… I
These Jeans have changed my feelings about getting dressed in the mornings.
It feels so nice to wear jeans that actually fit! I love them. I love them more than Svoboda and they are half the price. LOVE THEM. I thought I’d be a blue but I am actually a yellow.
I agree with Sniper – why the hell do they use such cheap material for their slacks? I hope they roll out some wool pants for fall in Right Fit sizes.
Full disclosure: I work for LB.
I love these jeans, and it seems that everyone I have measured for them loves them too!
They do stretch out a lot. When in doubt, go a little tight and wear them around the store for 15 minutes. (Maybe do some knee bends). Also, some washes are stretchier than others. YMMV.
I do agree, it would be great if we carried some wool pants…however, I know the cotton/linen pinstripes we carried for spring(which look adorable on the rack) aren’t so hot on the bod.
Most customers seem to want something with some stretch and give to it (that they can throw in the washer and dryer.) Granted, I live in CA, where wool pants aren’t too practical temp-wise.

I have a few pairs of reds, and that’s really only because all of my other jeans self-destructed in the thighs, as they are wont to do. I miss them dearly, because the new jeans just aren’t as good. They can’t be worn more than once in between washings because they get too loose. I also used to be a perfect average length in their jeans, but since they’ve been resized, I don’t fit in any length well. The average are too long, and the petite too short. I’m 5’6, so that shouldn’t be happening. Also, the fabric isn’t great. Light washes aren’t flattering the way dark are, but the dark jeans, even after several washes, turn everything they touch, including my favorite purses, blue.
Wrong country, wrong size for LB, but I wish all jeans came in different shapes like that. But yeah, in my experience all denim jeans stretch rather than shrink. (Except for the pair that I bought slightly too tight to account for future stretchage, and which have meanly remained exactly the same.) I actually like it if jeans go looser after one wearing, because I tend to wear them for activities where I want to move freely…
My jeans go at the thighs too. Sigh. I shall be happy someday when I manage to rip a pair at the knee first.
I got a pair a week ago and have been wearing them everyday. I have not owned jeans in years. I am so, so, so happy with them.
I’m going to have to agree with Sniper’s beef. I think I’ve tried on every pant in that store three times with no luck, the material just hangs badly!
And they WAY stretch…I’ve been debating on taking mine back because they feel so big and i’m losing weight, and these comments have definitely convinced me to move down a size.
something i noticed while trying them on…..there is a large difference, at least in the red on how flares and bootcut fit. the flares seemed to be significantly tighter in the thigh area, (so make sure you’re not-so-with-it boyfriend doesn’t go out to get you another size and hand you a flare at which point you spend a solid five mins cursing your huge ass and thighs for being between sizes)
I haven’t tried the Right Fit jeans yet, but I bought some of their standard cotton undies a couple of weeks ago. Two of the five pairs developed holes at the side seam on the first wear! WTF? I’m really irritated about it, since I love their undies, but come on, Walmart underwear lasts longer than that. Mind letting us know if you encounter something similar with yours?
I am so pleased to hear that they are doing this sizing. I don’t shop there, so this is the first I’ve heard of it. How wonderful to walk in to a store and not have a stupid number on the sizing tag staring you down and ridiculing you. This is a powerful move they have made and I hope more clothing manufacturers catch on.
I tried the Right Fit jeans, and I was disappointed. The old-style low-rise boot cut jeans fit me perfectly, but the Right Fit jeans? Not so much. I too got sized up and measured by a saleslady, and she pegged me as a Red 8 right off. I took a pair of Yellow and Blues into the dressing room just for kicks, and the Reds did fit better than the other two, but they still were too tight across the thigh and baggy below the knee. I tried a couple of different sizes and cuts of the Reds, but none of them were very flattering. Which was a big disappointment, because I’m down to one pair of jeans that fit. Now I don’t know what I’m going to do.
Jeans have always been a love-hate thing with me – never fitting quite right. I’m a heavy-in-the-hips-and-thighs gal.
However, a couple years ago I found a brand that fits me perfectly – Lee Rider jeans from Walmart (I think Kmart carries them as well) in size 18. For $20, they wear great (I just chucked my first pair after 4 years of regular wear). Different washes do fit slightly differently – the black jeans are a tad too tight, but the dark wash and light wash are great.
It’s interesting that the “perfect jeans” for me showed up at Walmart of all places. (I’m a college student so yes, I do buy clothes there since I’m on a tight budget).
I’d definately be willing to try on a few pairs at LB to see how they fit, but they’d have to be really great for me to buy them. I have a hard time imagining they’d fit better than Lee Riders for me.
I almost always have a bad experience when I go to LB for pants. I try to find 14 or 16 TALL in anything and have no luck. The sales people tell me I can get them online and I’m more than welcome to bring them back to the store if they don’t fit. Well, damnit, I want pants NOW, you know? I’ll give the new jeans a try though, but I finally found a line of jeans that are long enough for me, don’t stretch out and actually fit nice…Harley Davidson. No kiddin’!
