Wedding Barbie

July 6th, 2007

I totally have a challenge for you, fatshionistas. Find me a wedding dress.

You see, I’m having a wedding reception (not a ceremony) in September. And I need a dress. Since the event is more casual, I definitely do not want the frou frou creampuff meringue gown. I am thinking something more engagement party-like. It doesn’t have to be white, but it can be. I am just basically clueless. I don’t even have a color scheme yet (but if I find the perfect dress, I will be willing to build my color scheme around it).

Melinda is wearing this to a wedding, and I love the skirt, but I think it still might be a little too fancy. I still like Jordin’s American Idol dress but if I wear black, is that tack? And is it not quite fancy enough? Also, I do not want to look like a doily.

So there you go. If you feel like helping out a sister, post your ideas in the comments. If I pick your dress, you can totally come to the wedding.

This is the dress I’m getting married in next summer (I think- my I’m having trouble commiting):

Look through Sydney’s Closet– it’s the biggest collection of plus sized dresses out there.

It’s also fun to just run into a David’s Bridal and have a look-see at what different dresses look like on you. The one out in Daly City is really big, and they were really nice and accomodating to my size 28 self. Make sure you take a peep at their bridesmaid dresses, especially the clearance rack.

I have all my wedding dress bookmarks at work, so I’ll post more later!

I forgot Nordstroms! They have had some REALLY pretty dresses in the last year.

I like this in the Baby Pink:

Slight hijack, but I just NEED this:

Ok, back to your wedding. Simple, and crazy sexy on the right frame:

I love pink and brown, and maybe you’re looking for sleeves? (Oh god with the sleeves… is there a more politically loaded dress style for fat girls?):

If you want to go with something very retro-classic, I found this fabulous red Greta Garbo dress from Pin-Up Girl. It’s not wedding-classic, but it’s classic. :) On the website, it’s shown in turquise.

If you want to wear black, wear black! It’s your wedding reception so you should do as you please. The website for the book Offbeat Bride has pics of people who wore lots weirder stuff than black to their weddings. I just bought a dress off of ebay for my brother’s wedding next month and I’m really happy with it. You need to know your measurements to buy properly though, so maybe you wouldn’t want to take the risk of a dress not fitting properly.

Ooh! I want to come to the wedding!

Abby Z: less formal (maybe not formal enough), but with a hint of bridey.

Also Abby Z, similar to the Jordin dress, but in red (and with flutter sleeves).

And I’m personally crazy about this one, but don’t know if it’s your style.

    Too cutesy?

    Too green?

This has a sorta similar feel to the skirt you love, but isn’t as formal; kind of a love it or hate it dress, though.

Zaftique has a new bridal boutique with less formal stuff. Hit or miss, and I’d probably take the sleeves off most of the ones I like, but they’re inexpensive and bridey without being too much.

A lot of the Watters & Watters bridesmaid dresses could fit the bill. There’s a range of formality there.

Finally, if you want to go ’50s bombshell, Whirling Turban does some pretty fabulous custom stuff. I’d be all over one of the brocade dresses for what you describe.

That’s the best I got. Good luck. :)

might be nice with a nice wrap.

It’s your party, wear what you want and will be comfortable in. If you got a nice shawl/wrap thing to go over the Jordin dress, that would be perfectly all right, too.

  9. Molly, on July 6th, 2007 at 10:49 am Said:

Well, firstly what are you preferences? Things like sleeves or lack thereof, material, and price range can help narrow down the search. Will it be an outdoor event? Will there be air conditioning? Will people be getting tipsy on champagne? (Bring out the flat shoes!)
For the reception only, you can wear pretty much whatever you feel like wearing. The only reason to worry about the color of the dress is to make sure that you can match the event decorations to it.
Some preliminary picks (sorry, I don’t remember how to do tags this early in the morning):

If you want to wear the black dress, you should wear the black dress. It’s a party, not a wedding, and superstitions about color are kind of silly anyway. I think that would look great on you, and you could wear it again all year round. You will have to start attending more cocktail parties, however.

I also think this is really pretty, but the long sleeves might be too hot.

What is it about wedding dresses that perk up women’s ears? The most comments I ever received in any one blog entry on my own blog were on wedding dresses.

I found mine off the rack and am having it altered. It’s super formal, though. This is the first time since freshman year Homecoming I am wearing a dress, but some of the ones linked to above are super cute. Since we’re running away to get married on an island, we’re having an informal reception when we return. Maybe I’ll pick one of those cute numbers out to wear and shock the hell outta the family.

“What is it about wedding dresses that perk up women’s ears?” Ha! I know. Ever since I started planning my wedding last month, it’s like my eyes are peeled for any mention of the word. Weird… I hope it goes away later, I don’t want to become one of those bridezillas :) As for finding a dress that isn’t a crazy cream puff, try http://www.gatheringguide.com for finding stores in your area you haven’t checked yet. It turned up some stores for me that were awesome and I’d driven by a million times without seeing.

I think you should wear a sari! Sarees are flattering (and easy to tailor) to a lots of different body types, beautiful, and just all around special! Plus, you are in the East Bay, no? University Ave in Berkeley will have a ton of places for you to look through.

Okay, I may be a tad biased towards the sari-as-wedding-gown thing.* If you’d prefer something less Indian, I think you would look smashing in a red chiffony halter top. This one came up in a google search. So pretty!

You could get a seamstress to make you exactly what you want. In Britain, anyway, it’s not any more expensive than buying an off-the-rack wedding dress, and if you’re going for a shorter dress that would make it cheaper again. You have plenty of time until September!

And if you want to wear black, wear it! There are no actual rules, no matter what anyone says. But white can be wearable too…

If you’re going to dance, I would advise against corsets unless you wear them all the time and love them. I’ve seen so many brides tugging at them and looking uncomfortable! (And avoided them when I got married, for that reason.)

  26. littlem, on July 6th, 2007 at 7:33 pm Said:

OK, like one of my faves on S1 of Top Chef, I may not “succeed and I will fail horribly” at this, BUT:

    1) If you’re looking for simultaneously frou and not frou, perhaps this:

    http://jpeterman.com/product.asp_Q_pn_E_1824_A_c_E_8_A_seq_E_50

They are the masters of story frou,/garden party/hostess, they go to 16 but size quite generously, they only make 50 or so of each dress. So if you like it, call them & ask what the measurements are for that dress.

    2) What’s also interesting is the lack of in the post about whose wedding this is. I will not pry, but if you decide to go slightly more frou with drama, I thought you might enjoy this:

    http://www.alfredangelo.com/index.cfm/fuseAction/COLLECTIONS.productDetail/fromAdvancedSearch/0/productID/2039e191-e45b-4b44-bba1-6a2ac07f9712/categoryID/8b186130-0d63-4e3c-ac5c-aea0d9566e1c

    a) You can choose your own color insert and skirt length.
    b) They have another section where you can pick & choose/mix & match top and separates, with various tops/skirts, much like David’s but with a slightly bigger selection I think.

Plus I have seamstresses in my family, so I’m spoiled, but you could also consider the Vogue patterns. Then you can have your choice of material and it will fit precisely to your measurements (which can make diva Barbies of us all, after all).

  27. Cindy, on July 6th, 2007 at 9:56 pm Said:

Whoever mentioned a sari, have you ever priced those gorgeous saris on University Ave? The uber-gorgeous ones will set you back about a grand. :)

Chinese-tailor.com will custom make gorgeous chinois-y dresses in a variety of styles for around $200. It takes about 3 weeks to ship from Hong Kong or you can pay a bit extra for expedited shipping and get in about a week. I’ve bought a bunch of clothing from them and everything is absolutely perfect.
