Model Behavior

June 6th, 2007

A fascinating expose about the pressure to be thin in the world of modeling. An ex model dishes about everything from pervert photographers to having her fingers measured as a test of whether she was “too fat.”

There was a strange camaraderie, however, as all the models at my agency had been told to lose weight – by any means necessary. My female manager suggested I try the hardboiled egg diet or the apple diet, eating only one type of food. I retorted by suggesting a more balanced regime, but the idea seemed to cause genuine confusion…The first girl, a blonde New Zealander, then stepped forward. She had lost 7lb in the four days since her arrival. “Very professional,” our boss congratulated her, “but don’t faint!”

And this girl was only a size six! Here’s a similar article by a now plus-size model who basically developed an eating disorder trying to be a “regular” model:

Louise says: “I’d skip breakfast then have a Diet-Coke at 11am. If I was feeling particularly hungry I’d eat some chewing gum. I smoked a lot of cigarettes too and at lunchtime I’d buy a red pepper from Safeways.

It’s a scary world out there.

This is so sad on so many levels.
I was in acting for a long time in my youth and was constantly told that I was too fat for parts ( I was 5 foot 7 inches and 135 pounds)
    or to even consider modeling.
My best friends in acting and modling all had eating disorders ( and still do)
so did I for a long time.

I never would have known Louise M. was a plus-sized model just from looking at her. She is stunning and certainly doesn’t look “plus-sized”. What a sad world.

    The other article? Horrifying.

Do you remember when Kate Dillon was speaking out about what it took for her to be a regular model?

OMG, Louise M is breathtaking – if you like that Helen-of-Troy/Aphrodite look, I mean. Wow. I can only assume in this instance that “plus” means “plus better looks and a better figure than you’d find if you combed half a continent.”

So terrible — and also, I would be such a raging bitch on the diet coke and cigarette diet. Or the hardboiled egg diet. Or the fucking apple diet. Those sound more like starvation tactics that diets. Sick, truly sick.
