The Other Joy Nash
Everyone is looking for Joy Nash after her awesome Fat Rant, and some of them are finding the other Joy Nash, who has published what she calls a “Not Fat Rant”:
“And really, she doesn’t look that fat to me. If I passed her in the street, I probably wouldn’t have thought twice about her weight. I’m pretty surprised when she says she’s 224 pounds. I would have guessed 190, tops. The Fat Rant is very entertaining. This Joy Nash has a flair for performance that I definitely don’t share (I’m a writer, after all). She has a lot of good things to say. People shouldn’t be so hung up on appearances, clothing manufacturers should get a clue, and you should definitely smile and be polite to everyone no matter what their size, shape, or degree of beauty. But I don’t agree most people can’t lose weight if they really want to (for the right reasons, of course.)”
It’s not really very ranty, but she lists a lot of reasons why she “shouldn’t” have been able to lose weight (like genetics, carbohydrates, pregnancy, and a hatred of exercise) but says she did it anyway. So, which Joy Nash is right for you?

Do I have to choose? I think both Joy Nashes are great for thinking that fat does not equal ugly or bad.
No, I think it’s safe to say you can feel free to enjoy them both!
You know, this other Joy Nash seems like a very nice person. But, while I respect her reasons for losing weight, I am troubled by her dismissal of the Joy Nash of Fat Rant’s message — she is fat. Oh, no, says the other Joy Nash, she isn’t THAT fat. Which just reinforces “fat” as a Bad Word from which people want to distance themselves. Her reasons for her own weight loss are fine and dandy — she is welcome to do as she pleases with her own body. But she is totally missing the point.
Just FYI — I left a comment for the Other Joy Nash and, after responding with a long comment that totally missed my point, she enabled comment moderation and hasn’t approved anything since. I think she has chosen to silence the debate on size/body acceptance in her blog.

Um, luck?
Plus, if she lost the weight without working out?
She’s going to gain it back. ESPECIALLY if she’s having blood sugar issues. (Diabetes runs in my family too, so I know a little about this.)
Working out adjusts your body’s glycogen balance because that’s what muscles use for fuel. If you lose weight without working out, of course you’ve lost some muscle tissue, which is going to exacerbate any blood sugar fluctuation problems you may have, not solve them.
littlem:
I would agree with you, except she says she had chronic fatigue a few years back.
When I had CFS I gained about 45 pounds for no reason. (Like, eating 1500 calories a day no reason). I got better, and 40 pounds dropped straight off again. The last 5 have settled in for good.
So yes, effortless weight loss is out there. You just need to contract a mysterious metabolism-sapping disease and feel like crap for 3 years before it will work for you.
