1. We talked about April Flores, the plus-size pinup and adult film star awhile back. She’s in the news again, criticizing the ridiculous American Apparel for their sizing prejudices, and talking about her work, body confidence, and fat prejudice. As if you needed more evidence that she’s both gorgeous and awesome.

I now know that confidence and being a happy, positive person plays a more important role in attraction than body size alone. My main motivation for doing erotic work is to make the statement that fat women can express their sexuality and be sexual beings. I am challenge the norms of what is considered beautiful and sexy. I want people to examine their own ideas of what they consider appealing. For many people beauty does not just come in a size 0.

In related news, this is a very funny take on American Apparel’s “not our demographic” bullshit.

2. Holy crap you guys, it’s the solution we’ve all been waiting for! I love Allie Brosh and her finely tuned sense of the ridiculous.

The Weasel Belt is a revolutionary new product that uses the wonders of weasels to whittle your waist! Was that egregious alliteration annoying? You bet it was!

Anyway, the Weasel Belt works by attaching a cage-like structure to your abdomen and then releasing several live, rabid weasels into the enclosure. You don’t even have to do anything! You just sit there and let the weasels gnaw your love handles away!

3. Speaking of weasels, Julien MacDonald has gone on record with his foot in his mouth, which must have taken some serious flexibility. He says plus-size models aren’t taken seriously, and shouldn’t win a modeling competition. Because he’s an ass.

“There were no plus-size models,” Macdonald reportedly said of [Britain's Next Top Model].

“This is a serious show. You can’t have a plus-size girl winning — it makes it a joke.

“It’s not fair on them — you’re setting them up for a fall. I know what would happen to them. They are looked down on.”

Because maybe, way too often, still, even after all the “celebration of ‘real women’” fooferah going on in the popular media, plus size models are usually not included in modeling competitions and taken as seriously as smaller-sized models, maybe? WEIRD. Shut up, Julien. Can I call you Julien? Too bad.

4. This was very cool—an interview with a plus-size fashion stylist. She’s got some old chestnuts about “creating proportion” and fear of “adding bulk” and whatnot (maybe she should have a long conversation with the deeply fabulous chestnut-roasting Beth Ditto), but she also has some interesting things to say about the industry, fashion, and even getting into the business.

I hope that as a stylist I can contribute to the plus size fashion industry as an educator, role model, and mentor. I truly enjoy connecting to real women all over the country and helping them feel great about themselves by offering them a fresh perspective on plus fashion and style. I have found my niche with the plus industry and I hope to continue partnering with plus related companies, designers, and industry leaders to reach out to society and media and showcase curvy women in a positive, flattering way.

5. This made me happy. You need something beautiful to hang in your house, and remind you that the female body has been worshipped for millennia? Check out this print.

So my feelings about celebrities who lose weight are well documented and I believe could be summed up as “conflicted.” Seth Rogan totally gets it, though.

Actor Seth Rogen is struggling to accept his newly svelte figure – because he’s let down the legions of chubby men who looked up to him. The funnyman slimmed down to star in forthcoming comic book move The Green Hornet, and has to cope with strangers approaching him about his weight loss…

“I think for chubby guys, I was their guy so they were like, ‘I can be chubby. Seth Rogen’s chubby, so who cares.’ But now I’m not so chubby anymore. So now they’re like, ‘I have to lose weight.’ I’ve let them down. I’ve blatantly sold out. It’s only for money.”

I’ve talked a lot about female “fat icons,” but this did make me think about the guys, and who it is they look up to. We’ve got Beth Ditto and Queen Latifah and Nikki Blonsky; who are the fat icons for guys? Do guys even see it that way?

I don’t feel betrayed by Seth Rogan losing weight, really; number one he was never an icon for me, and number two it is “okay” for guys to be overweight, especially comedians (Jack Black, Ricky Gervais, Jim Belushi…) in a way that it is definitely not okay for women. What do you guys think—about Seth, about “selling out,” or about the size of male celebrities?

I’m trying to hunt down a picture of my wedding dress to show you all for feel good Friday, and hopefully that will materialize sometime before the end of the day. (Here I am in a pool; how about that?)

In the meantime, I found a zine called Fat Girl on etsy. Here’s anongrrl’s description of issue #8:

[I]ncludes a bunch of art, and is a text heavy zine about what it’s like to be a fat girl. this issue has personal stories about fat experience with clothes, a thank you to the anonymous older FG wearing a bikini top at the beach, a letter to my belly, and a thong story (yes, they make those in our size!).

Since I am broke after the wedding, I haven’t yet purchased an issue. But it looks fabulous; I intend to.

I finally have an excuse to write about the comic strip everyone loves to hate, For Better or For Worse. If you read Pop Culture Junk Mail or Fresh Hell (I linked to both of their FBOFW categories) you’ve already been following the saga of Liz and her hateful true love, Anthony. (If you want to know why Anthony is hateful, the “Why I Hate Anthony” essay is a good start.) (#8 is the one that really gets me.)

This week things have been really heating up. Anthony shaved the mustache that made him look like a grandpa, and his date for the wedding turned out to be a socially awkward chick who showed Liz her dental work two panels into their first meeting. And today it was revealed that–wait for it–she’s fat too!

Here’s what they had to say on Snarkfest today:

God, that pisses me off. Especially since I’m fairly certain every person in this strip ever has been tall and lithe except this one girl. What is she implying here, anyway? Anthony is clearly settling because he can’t have Liz? Bitch.

Now I get it. She’s a jolly fat girl who acts funny and cute because she can never, ever be pretty or desirable. Somebody threw Melissa McCarthy, Lesley Boone, and Ricki Lake in a blender and it all came out wrong.

I cut Lynn massive amounts of slack in general, but the reveal of his date being fat and this clearly being a way to telegraph UNDESIRABLE/NOT A REAL THREAT pissed me off bigtime. Quick! Write her letters and demand she marry Anthony to Julia to prove she’s not sizeist!

I can’t wait to see where this goes next! We all know Julia is cannon fodder for the Liz/Anthony relationship, but could there be a fat joke around the bend? If anyone else is talking about this, let us know in the comments. Julia could totally do better, though.
