Beth And Gabby And Oscar

March 10th, 2010

Back from vacation and trying to catch up! Did I miss anything exciting? If so, leave a comment or Tweet me up!

In the meantime, here’s the Fug Girls’ take on Gabby Sidibe’s dress at the Oscars. I have to say I don’t love it; I don’t love the color and I don’t love the applique business. On the other hand, I love this insane jumpsuit being worn by Beth Ditto, so I might just be crazy. I wouldn’t rule it out.

Speaking of the Oscars, Kate Harding wrote a piece for Salon in defense of Mo’Nique’s Oscar speech that I thought was very thought-provoking. And also, I am so happy that Kathryn Bigelow won. (Even if every recipient of a Scientific and Technical award appeared to be a white dude.) I hope she inspires other little girls to be directors. I really, really hope so.

I was also not a huge fan of the Gabby Oscars dress. The color looked great on her, but the gown looked like something you could see on Rue McClanahan. I love Rue, but it skewed a little fussy for me.

You know… I wasn’t a fan of Gabby’s dress either. I did actually love the color and the general style looked great on her and no one can deny that she ROCKED that dress like nobody’s business. And it was great to see her on the red carpet taking it at in and not trying act like a seasoned Hollywood person already bored with it all. But I’m with you… the appliques just didn’t do it for me. They were kind of reminiscent of an early 90s prom look.

Beth was wearing that same jumpsuit at their SF show in Oct. Loved it!

Didn’t love the appliques either. But I did like the color, and I thought it was cool that all the women associated with the movie wore something approximating sapphire.

Oh, I didn’t get the whole sapphire thing! We just were upset that the screenwriter didn’t mention Sapphire when he gave his speech! (And Mo’Nique didn’t either.) Poor Sapphire!

I would give Mo’Nique more credit if she didn’t play this whole think like she had to be paid to do anything. I don’t get the whole angry acceptance speech. Be gracious. That would be remembered down the road. I am sure that she is super busy, but really at the end of the day, you were given a gift. It should never, ever be expected. Grace and thankfulness go a long way in my book.

Each to their own, I guess. I LOVED Gabby’s dress, including how the applique was used in such a flattering way. I thought it really suited her. The jumpsuit, though? It looks really… unfortunate, to me. Like a silky potato sack. It does look a lot more comfortable, though! ;-)

Please someone give Howard Stern a reality check.

I’m not a fan of Gabby’s dress either. I don’t hate it, though I think she could have opted for a much more flattering style, and a style/color more age appropriate. I think the dress made her look much older. Tried loving the dress after reading many positive comments about it on the web, but as a big girl myself that dress just doesn’t do it for me.

ACTUALLY, I distinctly remember there being one fabulous (skinny, white, blonde, but whatever) woman among all the science and tech recipients. That was kind of my favorite part of the oscars.
