Congratulations, Kate!
As if I was going to let the fact that MY GIRLFRIEND KATE WINSLET WON AN OSCAR go unrecognized. When I was waiting for her name to be called, Ian turned to my cousin and her boyfriend and said “Be careful. If Kate doesn’t win, you’re going to see Mo go crazy. She’s going to start throwing your furniture. She’s going to trash this place.”
I also wanted to tell you the sweet story of my friend Steve, who called and left this message on my machine:
“Every time I see Kate Winslet, I think of you. I think you’re prettier than she is, though.”
(Obviously that is ridiculous and untrue, but I highly recommend having friends like these.)
KATE WINSLET WON AN OSCAR! Now she just needs to win, like, seventy-five more, and I’ll be happy. And in case you missed this clip somehow…

I heart Kate Winslet, too!!!!!!!! SO glad she won! (Love “Extras,” too. She’s brilliant!)
I thought it was a brilliant performance. Much less showy than Charlize Theron in Monster, where so much of it was about her physical transformation. Kate Winslet in The Reader is always recognisably Kate Winslet, but she is a complex and mostly unsympathetic character so that you also forget it’s Kate Winslet. I can’t see too many actors taking on that part. I also loved that she dedicated her BAFTA for the film to the two producers who died last year, Anthony Minghella and Sydney Pollack.
I haven’t seen either of her movies this year, but I generally love her in every role I see her in.
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is one of my favorite movies ever.
