Vicious Fat Hate From Anthony Bourdain And Ted Nugent
It’s literally almost impossible to find the most offensive quote in this transcript of a conversation between Ted Nugent and Anthony Bourdain on Bourdain’s show No Reservations. Here’s Nugent:
I know there are people who are mentally deranged that just don’t know better, and they do need help, but 99 percent of the sperm whales walking the streets of this country, they got up in the morning and they go, “I’m fatter than a [expletive deleted] pig, and here’s a list of things that I should not do and should not eat, and I’m doing all of them today, again.”
Here’s Bourdain:
I think you should pay more. If you’re leaking over into my seat … that I paid full price for, you know what, you’re paying for half my seat, Jumbo, and by the way, don’t block my [expletive deleted] exit door, because I’m coming right through you.
They also suggest that the solution to this problem is to shame fat people at school, work, and home and tell them not to eat whatever it is they’re eating. Wow, great idea! This is the face of fat hate, my friends; this is why our voices are important.

Yesterday, I made the choice to eat a salad topped with grilled salmon. This morning I chose to run for an hour with my dog.
These are choices I make just about everyday.
Still fat. See how your views come out a little simplistic, mkjjh?
As for Bourdain and Nugent? I saw the clip on The F-Word, and I’ll repest myself here. I think it’s beyond hilarious that these two CELEBRITIES would take issue with ANYONE ELSE for feeling “entitled.”
Cuz, you know, neither of these guys have ever assumed THEY deserve special treatment. Ever.
repest = repeat
And shaming has worked so well in the past.
I found this both disturbing and depressing. I really don’t understand this level of meanness.
I am overweight by around 60lbs from where I feel a comfortable weight- and that is not “thin” by societal standards. I read blogs occasionally about fat acceptance or at least, tolerance- including this one and about five others fairly regularly. The one thing that has always bothered me is where are the posters that are like me? I am fat by choice- meaning I eat way too much and the extra calories are stored as fat. I eat candy and I eat fried food (as well as healthier fare) and I know for an absolute fact that if I ate less I would be thinner. In fact, I used to be much thinner and I understand how many calories I can eat to stay thinner and daily I make the choice to eat more than that. I would love to be thinner again because I am uncomfortable physically being larger and I don’t enjoy the way I look. But I love food and everytime I overeat, it was my choice and under my control. I want to relate to others like me, but all I ever read is how other overweight women eat such healthy food and NOT too much of it (how dare they imply that!) and they exercise regularly yet are still fat. I am 40 and have met hundreds of women in my life and all of them that are overweight are so because they eat more calories than their bodies can use- and they know that and own that. For me? I want to be thinner but am unwilling to choose to eat less (or better) at this point in my life- even though I feel I want to. Do I feel it is unfair that I can’t eat as many calories as my best friend who stays thin even eating more than me? I honestly don’t. No more than I feel like it is unfair for me not to have asthma like she does. Where are the overweight people who are medically fine but just eat too much and don’t exercise consistently? Am I really the only overweight person who believes being fat is a choice and under my own control? Because I know I can control it- I just don’t choose to eat less or exercise more and I admit it freely.
On post topic- I can’t say I don’t agree with either of the topics they are talking about. I just don’t agree with them being assholes in how they are talking about it when they know they influence their “audiences”.
I’m sure that Bourdain, as a former drug addict and smoker, feels even more vindicated in hating fat people. Since he was able to exercise control and stop using heroin and stop smoking tobacco, clearly there has to be something wrong with people who “can’t” stop eating.
Nevermind that the only effective way to beat an addiction is to quit cold turkey. Also nevermind that it’s impossible to quit eating cold turkey, unless you want to wind up very dead very fast.
Not that I think being fat is a result of addiction (except for, perhaps, rare cases of compulsive eating), but I’ll bet Bourdain sees it that way.
I’m not surprised. I already dislike Bourdain because of his bigotry towards vegetarians and vegans.
