Big Fat Media Sweep

January 28th, 2008

Check out MoPie’s national television debut on the Mike and Juliet Show! She makes the case for acceptance and less judgment without making grand generalizations (*cough*). Rachel from F-Word also nails the point home, plus, bonus, we get to watch their cute husbands too! Look at the fat girls who are married! That never happens!

Thanks to Petulantrumble for putting this out on Youtube!

I won’t speak for all fat girls everywhere, but I am definitely proud to have Mo speak for the cause! Yay!

You guys were so totally on point, and MeMe Roth was so a joy-deficient creep full of sputtering, pointless rage. And I know she’s always that way, but you made her come off as extra huffy and ineffectual. AWESOME!

I’m eating a big bowl of white food in your honor!!!!!

And, I was horrified by the whole thing. I am so glad that Rachel circumvented the whole “what’s your exercise routine & diet” question because that one just made me see red. I’m once again infuriated that we have to justify our existence and our wanting to be respected for who we are.

You guys rocked – that Rachel is a pistol, man. And Mo, way to go with the re-interpretation of the “chubby-kids” question! (Because there are so many kids out there who are going to embrace a Cheetos-based lifestyle because of the gateway drug of fat acceptance. God, MeMe Roth is a loon. Maybe there’s something in her and Coulter’s hair products that make them crazy?)

Way to rock the message! You are made of sunshine and awesome, and you were the one bright spot in my day today.

You know, once I started calling her the “Mome Rath”, I figured I’d go back and re-read “Through the Looking Glass”. And I found Humpty Dumpty’s definition of the Mome Raths:
‘Well, a “RATH” is a sort of green pig: but “MOME” I’m not certain about. I think it’s short for “from home”–meaning that they’d lost their way, you know.’

    ‘And what does “OUTGRABE” mean?’

‘Well, “OUTGRABING” is something between bellowing and whistling, with a kind of sneeze in the middle…

O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay! I chortled in my joy.

/still can’t believe that “it’s okay to not hate yourself” is radical thought.

Mo, your comments were awesome. You came across as really at ease, not at all nervous, and you drove your points home. What a role model.
You came across as so, uh, real. Like a real, live, human being. Which really helps the point about being treated as such.
The two ladies to your right came across as very plastic and not people I would want to be friends with. Whereas you and Rachel seemed like women I would want to hang out with.

Nice job on the show! I have just started to get into FA/HAES after years of thinking I just needed to have self-control, etc. (interesting that my lowest weight was when I was bulimic) and I am so happy to see FA getting coverage, even when it is countered by ‘the medical viewpoint’ (as if that is the opposite to FA like democrat is to republican).

Thank you guys so much for all your support; we just got home and are simultaneously wired and exhausted. I have to say that Dr. Ashton was fabulous, though. We spent a lot of time talking with her both before and after we were on the air, and she was really great. I have no idea how she came across on TV, but I really loved her as a person.

Anyway—thanks for all the nice comments! When I have had some sleep, I’ll do better at responding to them.

I wish they had asked the skinny blonde chicks how tall they were, and how much they weighed. Not to prove any point, but I’m just genuinely curious where on the bell curves typical television and movie personalities fall in terms of weight, height, and BMI.

I thought you and Rachel really represented, as they used to say, I thought the other two sounded far less credible and seemed more wrong-footed.

I also have to smile when people say that we should have a middle ground between the two ‘extremes’, it reminds me of an old Spanish saying, if you stay in the middle of the road, you are liable to get run over!

The truth is not always in the ‘middle’.

I’m not sure why people are slamming the doctor, though. I didn’t think she sided with Roth. In fact, what she was saying seemed more in line with what Mo & Rachel were talking about.
