And A Slice Of Apple Pie
Rachel sends along this spoof of the Backstreet Boys’ “I Want It That Way” called “I Want A Fat Babe.”
Of course the comments are predictable as ever. Fat girls are gross, blah blah blah. And of course the video involves the fat babe mostly eating, with lyrics like “Queen of the all-you-can-eat buffet” and “every step is like an earthquake.” Web TV Hub says:
I really hope this video doesn’t offend anyone, I’m a bit portly around the middle myself (what you get for spending 8 hours a day at a computer) and I found it funny.
The song is excellent, with the tune staying true enough to the original to make the lyrics funny, but it’s the flash animation video which makes it for me.
So, you decide: funny or not? As a disclaimer, I should probably mention that years ago, my sister, my cousin and I did a video spoof of Fiona Apple’s song “Criminal” that was all about how she was too thin. “All I want is a Big Mac Meal / cause I’m feelin’ like I need to eat / and I really want some fries / and a slice of apple pie / because food is all I really need.” Well, at least I was young and innocent then, right? And at least we didn’t put it up on You Tube.

There are both good and bad things about this video.
+ + The fat chick is HOT
– – Disparagement of thin women (which goes along with)
– – dividing women and making it seem as if they should be each other’s competition
– Fat/Thin eating equations
+ parodies and plays on words, ie, “What they say has no weight.”
+ use of the word fat
– using “more cushion for the pushin”
+ “Jenny Craig” is a mistake
– BSB wedged in her fat
– seems like it was put together by an in-the-closet fat fetishist
– all the fat chick does is eat
+ Nick Carter as a chicken wing with giant balls
– references to earthquakes
o why did they choose to have her not wear a bra? (neutral)
I didn’t find it much more objectifying and annoying than most mainstream pop videos*, but I didn’t think it was particularly funny. But then I don’t know the original song very well. I didn’t particularly feel it was “dividing women” because it didn’t seem to be talking to women at all… but to some audience that doesn’t include them. Not great.
I did think she was pretty, though.
*Don’t ever get me started on “My Humps”. Or “Don’t Cha”. Just don’t!
I think this video is about five years old or so, I can remember watching it back when I was in college *feels old.* It’s a decent parody, I suppose, but I do find it hard not to get offended, mostly because the message that gets across is still that it’s weird and gross to prefer a big woman. I mean, just read the comments: “I want a small girl for god sake..
who likes such a freaking fat girl *pukes*
but it is funny ^^”
As an artist, I found the illustration and video work to be top-notch, but that’s it.
Maybe I’m a prude, but I just didn’t find this video funny nor empowering for women of any size. Thin women are portrayed as eating disordered, while fat women are shown as compulsive overeaters. I think I’ve just reached the point where these tired, old stereotypes have ceased to be amusing.
LIke the animation, and the eye-browing raising Howie D. at the end.
I’m not sure if the video doesn’t just revile women of all sizes.
Jury is still out for me.
Good Grief, is that s.conners comment spam? Because sticking vaseline up your nose can lead to lipoid pneumonia…
I have to admit, the first time I saw this about five years ago, I thought it was pretty funny – the high quality flash just did it for me.
It’s cute, but as these kinds of things go, I prefer Queen’s “Fat-Bottomed Girls”.
I thought it was cute :)
Congrats for the mention in the December issue of “Women’s Health”!
Seems to me the video is more of a fetishist thing. What’s the term? “Feeder?” That’s who it seems like made – or at least was the inspiration for – the video.
They’ve taken a stereotypical view of a fat woman and tried to glamorize it. And they lyrics? They’re just sick. It seems almost like they’re trying to empower “chubby chasers” but in the process, they’ve degraded every single fat woman in existence.
I thought there were some funny parts, but definitely overall it just made it look like there’s no in-between- fat people overeat and thin people eat nothing.
And I think that attitude isn’t good for anyone.
