Mudflap Girl

October 11th, 2007

In the comments recently, pdxwoman noted that she doesn’t think of the mudflap girl as “fat.” It’s a timely observation because I was thinking one day recently that I wish I’d made her more curvy. I wasn’t sure it’s clear that it’s supposed to be the chubby version of the mudflap girl. Then I went and looked up the original silhouette, to see how different it really was.

There you go. That’s the “real” mudflap girl. Pretty wild, huh?

Actually, when I was first thinking of the logo design, I was thinking of doing a series of silhouettes of different shapes and sizes, ranging from thin to fat. It is absolutely beyond my Photoshop skills, but it would be cool, no?

Oh dear god. If the original mudflap girl were a real woman, her bosoms would make her topple over!

I like that the BFD-flap girl has two legs!

and yours has two arms! very reassuring. :)

that original mud-flap girl is amazingly perky.

    LOL

    And 2 arms.

First of all, I also go by Swellanor in some circles and that comment up there threw me for a loop. Hello fellow Swellanor!

Secondly, I think the BFD mudflap girl is much hotter.

I’ve always wondered why the mudflap girl had one arm and one leg. Yours is far more real. But yeah, I didn’t realize how much like Barbie she was in that she’d crack in half if she was a real woman. Real breasts that size could not possibly be that perky.

Actually, that one is unusually lame. This one:

looks more like yours, and more like I remember seeing on actual trucks.

Oops. The image didn’t show up. It’s here.

I think I’ve seen both skinny versions on actual trucks. I also think the BFD one is way hotter. I agree a range of sizes would be cool, but I think the current one looks good the way she is :)

The BFD mudflap girl is way hotter.

    However, she needs nipples.

Has the original got puppet wire hoicking them up, ‘cos those pupps are aerodynamically not possible.

I’m in love with the BFD mudflap girl. She’s hot (and looks like she could stand up without fainting from hunger or rickets).

I’m slowly getting used to the co-opting of the mudflap girl by women – I’m just old enough to remember when there was nothing ironic about it.

The creepiest part of the original is not her impossibly exaggerated boobs & butt or the waist that’s the same width as her arm – as deliberately insulting as those things may be.

No, look at her head. Notice how large it is in proportion to her body. Look at the small turned-up nose and how the features are set on the lower half of the face: That is the head of a CHILD.

I don’t doubt for a second that it’s the combination of that head on that impossible body that made the image an icon in the first place…which speaks volumes about the people who popularized it.

But having a laugh at it now is certainly healthier than getting offended and indignant. And the BFD girl does indeed rock (as well as having the appropriate number of limbs).

I love the mudflap girl, even though it’s totally un-PC to do so. The BFD girl is awesome, too, though. And slightly more PC. I love the multiple sizes idea, but have no Photoshop skillz to offer, either.

I think the original mudflap girl’s head looks so big because her hair is supposed to be big and thick and poofy. I could be totally wrong, though.

I have never before heard of “mudflap girls”… but I agree, I’d have said yours was curvy rather than fat. Though I think I may be visualising her posture as more of a three-quarter turn than is actually intended (not having seen the original). I think she’s cool, though.

(Please don’t give her sticky-outy nipples! I am tired of seeing women in comic-books with unnaturally erect nipples… are they all supposed to be freezing cold, or what? Rhetorical question!)

Oooooh, if one really wants to do more ‘realistic’ shapes with Mudflap girls, can we have ones that are pear, or apple shaped, and etc?
Also, what have all of us been doing with our lives that we don’t have mad photo-shop skills? Sigh, I went to grad school for Art History, and even I don’t think I can help.

awesomely, the latest episode of the Simpsons featured a bit on this exact topic. homer became a tow-truck driver, and when he was buying a tow truck, the truck had the conventional mudflap girl on the mudflaps.

but homer said, “i don’t know, my wife wouldn’t like that…it’s too sexy.” so the truck seller flipped up the flap to reveal another one, of a fat woman’s silhouette (she had big curly hair, and at least 40 lbs. on the BFD mudflap girl). homer replied, “still too sexy.” so the man flipped it up again, and it revealed a silhouette of homer posing like the mudflap girl.

i was totally shocked by this (because of the coincidence with its coinciding with the discussion started last week on this blog), but beyond that wasn’t sure what to think. on one hand, it was clear that the fat woman was supposed to be a less sexy woman than the thin one–but on the other hand, she is still referred to as sexy. and then homer becomes the punchline, which i think is really more of a joke at homer’s expense (which the show thrives on) rather than a dig at fat men in general.

i just couldn’t let this post go by without throwing this crazy coincidence out there!

Holy crap. What is that thing? I think it might be a “Grey” alien. In a wig. With a watermelon glued to its chest.

I have a whole new appreciation for your mudflap girl, who looks like an actual woman.

Anyone know the name of the sporting/casual men’s clothing brand that used the mud flap girl to decorate their gear?

I’ve been looking for mudflaps with this graphic to put on my truck, do you know where I can find them? It is so hot- I always hated the alienwaif mudflaps.

they’ll go with my new bumper sticker; If you cut of my reproductive rights, can I cut off yours?

    Thanks

I ordered some chubby mudflap girl decals on Ebay, but I like yours better. You should definitely consider getting some made, she’s very sexy!
