Subway Vs. McDonalds

September 12th, 2007

Even though Subway is associated with The Biggest Loser and that guy with the fat pants, their food does not always have fewer calories. When asked how many calories their meal contained, Subway eaters (vs. McDonalds eaters) consistently underestimated. This article is about that psychology.

46 college students were given coupons for either a McDonald’s Big Mac or a Subway 12-inch Italian B.M.T. The B.M.T. sandwich has 300 more calories than the Big Mac, but the Subway diners were less likely than the McDonald’s diners to order a diet soda, more likely to upgrade to a larger drink and more likely to order cookies.

Interesting. Also, classic cut all the way!

I usually get a 6″ sub (can’t eat a 12″ one in one sitting) and I always ask for the classic cut. Easier to eat and looks better. Also transports better if I buy it to take home. I guess I’m an exception to the rule about the soda, I always get a diet (too sweet for me if it’s not diet) and I don’t usually get a cookie either (or chips, I just have lots of extra veggies on my sub).

The hubby and I were perusing the nutritional guide to Subway when we stopped on our last vacation. Subway is the only fast food restaurant where we can get both something vegetarian and remotely healthy. I was surprised to see some of the sandwiches had almost 600 calories, and that was for a six-inch!

    I don’t know.
When I used to eat at subway – I knew before I ever went in if I was getting a diet soda (I ALWAYS drink diet soda) and/or cookies and chips.
    (always a cookie, never chips.)

There is something to be said about patterned eating – always getting the same item at the place where you eat out independent of the calorie count.

Well I’m still convinced that the way people lose weight via Subway is because it hits your stomach like a frigging rock. :p I only ever ate the Veggie Delite if I was desperately hungry and stranded at work late. And even then I sometimes preferred starving to that crap. It could’ve just been the Subway near me was kinda nastified.

Subway has saved my life on many occasions because sometimes (depending on the city) it’s almost impossible for a vegan to find something substantial to eat. Thankfully they make a sandwich without cheese and TONS of veggies. The last time I had one I was in New Hampshire (not a vegan friendly place). I must say it was pretty good and held me for the rest of that night.

I have to confess to liking Subway… I guess because unlike McDonald’s I feel like I’ve eaten proper food when I’ve had a sandwich there. Just rating food for calories is in no way a good measure for how healthy it is.

i think that article doesn’t look at all there is to see. okay, people estimated the calories of the subway b.m.t. sandwich too low, in that aspect they were mistaken. but a 12″ sandwich is not only 300 calories more, it’s also a double serving. if you go for a 6″ turkey breast sandwich instead you are as full as with a big mac, but you have 250 calories less.

I’m a Subway fan! As a member of Weight Watchers I can get a 6″ turkey mustard, no cheese, on wheat for (roughly 300 cal), baked chips, (120 cal) and diet soda (WW pts 7). and I’m totally satisfied. I feel like a slug all day if I eat fast food burgers and fries – they do nothing for me, except give me gut ache!
