It just goes to show that the scrutiny women are under is so severe even those held up as the ideal struggle with self image.

I never understood the mania over Scarlett. I never found her to be all that attractive. Not that I'm saying she's ugly. She's just an average looking person.

Definitely NOT FAT though.

Has anyone here ever seen Kate Winslet in person? I haven't either. In general I think people's ability to judge someone's size by looking at photographs or even movies is FAR more limited than they think it is. I see all of those "Ew, Kelly Clarkson is so big, I'm way smaller than her" posts and it makes me roll my eyes so hard that I might someday injure myself. 90% of the people who think they are smaller than Kelly Clarkson? Probably aren't. I bet we would be surprised to learn how small her jeans size is... not that her people would ever let that information become public, with good reason. Note, I am not saying people should feel bad because they are "fatter" than Kelly, or whatever. I just think that all of the posters at gossip sites who diagnose her as "overweight" based on a few paparazzi photos are incredibly full of shit and it is literally impossible for them to know what they're talking about with the information they have.

Also, this isn't actually my point but I have heard time and time again where people say "I saw Jennifer Aniston in person and she's TINY!" I'm not sure it's because "the camera adds 10 pounds." I think it's also because one thing looks thin when someone is on a set surrounded by other tiny celebrities, and another thing looks thin when they are out and about among "normal" people.

I can't prove this to any of you but it drives me nuts that we think we can look at a celebrity, standing alone in a shot, and actually have any hope of figuring out what size they wear. My opinion? NOPE. Until I see some kind of documented size tag from Kate's Gap jeans... or whatever... I will have to accept that it would be almost impossible to accurately judge her size from where I'm sitting. I suspect Mo Pie is right and she has been quite small at various points... but I just don't know.

I still think women should go around wearing shirts with their weight on them for one day, and watch everyone (especially men) have heart attacks over how much "fatter" or "thinner" some of us are than they thought.

I don't know, maybe I find this to be a hot-button topic for me because I feel like people try to place celebrity figures in reality where they shouldn't. Like "So-and-so looks like a 'normal, healthy woman,' I bet she's a size 10." Yeah... "normal and healthy" compared to all of the super-thin people we see in commercials, movies, and photos every day, so our perception is skewed IMO. It's a subtle way we pressure ourselves into thinking that there is no excuse not to look like celebrities when that is not realistic for most of us... even if we're talking about the "curvier" population of celebrities.

I have to chime in on the what size is Kate Winslet debate, I have three datapoints: my cousin, 5'3", US size 4, I have held her clothes up to me, I have hugged her, she is TEENY. My sister, 5'8", 140lb (ish), US size 8, she's got some muscle, very little body fat, she's on the athletic side for sure, not TEENY, but decidedly slim, and no noticeable excess flesh. Third data point, me, 5'8", 200lb (ish) US size 12 on top, size 16 on bottom, I definitely have excess flesh, and I'm sure I'm bigger that Winslet was in Beautiful Creatures, when she was running around in big 1950s knickers.

I'm pretty sure la Winslet is about 5'8" or so, and she is definitely on the slim side, but not teeny, so I completely believe that she's a size 8. Size 8 is pretty darn slim for 5'8", even though models are more like 5'10" and size 2-4.

I absolutely adore Scarlett Jo. I feel that she's got potential and that it shouldn't be based on how buxom or shapely she is. She's my most recent girl crush anyhow so I'm a bit biased.

i have noticed recently, on the shows that the kids like, on the disney channel and that whole thing, that they feature some larger looking girls, not the least of which is raven simone. while there is not a surge of them, it goes beyond the perfunctory token fat girl and that is a beautiful thing.

as far as scarlett johanessen i am only sad the discussion of her looks (amazing) overshadows any contemplation of her talent (non-existent).

Blah, as I said, there have certainly been times when she's been that size and bigger -- and I love her for proudly breaking the norm. In this particular movie, though? She looked unusually small. And since she was in a bathing suit or naked for a lot of it, I probably would have noticed if she had an ounce of fat on her. She looked healthy, but not a bit more than that.

And is anyone else as perturbed by the constant labeling of women like Scarlett and Kate Winslet as “curvy?”

YES. And it goes the other way, too. It's not even the implication that they're fat that bothers me -- it's the implication that this is, in fact, what acceptably curvy looks like, and anything bigger is OMG FAT.

I watched Little Children the other night, and there's a scene where Kate Winslet orders a bathing suit over the phone and says, "I don't know -- size 10? 8?" Bless her heart for being willing to speak those words on screen, but PLEASE. She was naked all over that movie, and if she was a U.S. size 8 then, I'm a size a Billion. (Which is not to say there haven't been times when she was that big, but this was not one of them.) But because the character was supposed to be "average," they had a maybe size 4 actress refer to herself as an 8/10 instead of actually getting an average-looking woman to play the role.
