Celebrity Weight Loss
A relevant piece of advice from the Answer Bitch (who gets extra points for her Harry Potter reference). The question is, why do celebrities lose weight so quickly, when it takes “regular people” forever?
[I]t’s pretty easy to lose weight fast when you never have to count a calorie on your own, or craft your own workouts, or, you know, be anywhere else but the gym. “The reality is… that anyone could lose weight quickly if that was their job.”
And when all else fails, some stars simply opt to starve. “Celebrities know that they are under a microscope, so they go to extreme, unhealthy measures to quickly lose weight,” says trainer Jim Karas, who has trained many stars, including Hugh Jackman for the third X-Men installment. “Trust me. I’ve seen it thousands of times.”
Just a nice reminder that you shouldn’t judge yourself next to, say, Jessica Simpson (according to her, she works out five days a week for two hours a day). Of course, if you want to try dieting like a celebrity for a while, you can always hire a personal chef and follow these weight loss tips from Michael George:
George suggested [Reese] Witherspoon start eating one or two servings of fruits and veggies from each of six color groups: green, red, blue, purple, yellow and orange.
Wait…blue? What fruits and veggies are blue?

Blueberries? Bluefoot mushrooms?
Blue corn, blue bean shrubs and blue quandong fruit! I somehow doubt those last two come up in Reese’s food repertoire.
More importantly, what fruits/veggies are left out for not being one of these colors?
I think kiwi and coconut (both brown and fuzzy) and blackberries are left out.
Oh, and mushrooms (brown or white). It is a sad life when you can’t eat mushrooms.
I think the blue category ends up being a mixture of darker colors. All veggies and fruit fit into each of the categories even if it seems a bit of a stretch color wise. Kiwi is in the green category, coconut in the yellow/white.
Ha, how do I remember this crap?
I only know this from reading my frozen fruit bag one morning, which mentioned something about getting a specific serving amount of each color group. I thought it was weird when I read it. Can’t we just stick to the regular recommended intake of fruit and veggies? God forbid you eat too much of the yellow/white group! (The starchier group, bananas, coconut)
Great post! I love the Answer Bitch! Another reason why celebs lose weight so quickly – but which she couldn’t repeat as she would get her ass sued off – is that they take dangerous drugs and/or resport to liipo. A while ago it was rumoured that Jessucka Simpson, along with mnay other celebs, took Human Growth Hormone and more recently it has been suggested in gossip mags that she has slimmed down her hips, butt and thighs with the help of the magic cannula.
And then there’s the ever-popular Cocaine Diet which I understand is very popualr with the Hollywood crowd.
Sorry about the typos – that’s what happens if I post before I put in my contacts.
Regarding the color thing: A dietician once explained to me that every fruit/vegetable color is caused by certain vitamins/secondary plant compounds. So if you eat red vegetables you get this much Vitamin X plus antioxidant; when you eat orange vegetables you absorb this much Vitamin X plus carotenoids that aren’t in red or green veggies (just as an example). So you should see to it that you eat fruits and vegetables of every color so that your body receives all the nutrients (vitamins and minerals) that it needs.
But that being said we’re back on the topic of demand feeding – currently I have this thing for green food (hmmm, avocados!), but don’t want orange food (carrots, squash) at all. *shrugs* So this method of color variety doesn’t work for everybody.
As and addition to blue food: How about prunes, plums, blue grapes and red cabbage (which is called “Blaukraut” – “blue cabbage” in German)?
Gah, sorry about my typos – it’s time for me to get to bed (it’s 2 am here)… Damn time difference. :o)
I would call most of these so-called blue foods purple, which is another category, I think (eggplant, plums, and so forth). But blueberries! I can’t believe I forgot them!
Serious, I think I usually see the blue & purple categories linked together and as Karin suggested, plums, grapes, etc. go into the blue-purple category. I think blackberries are in this category too. But, that view is not as entertaining to poke fun at.
Blueberries and blue corn (off the top of my head; already mentioned).
Those big bleu grapes with the seeds, arguably.
Blue cornflower preserve, if you want to get real esoteric.
I think that article makes a pretty good point: if you have lots and lots of expendable income to hire trainers and nutrition consultants, it probably isn’t quite as hard to lose weight and/or be fit as it might be without that income. Oprah’s a great example of that.
But I also wonder if there isn’t some little bit of what we nerdy types like to call selection bias at play here. That is to say, maybe it’s the actors and actresses who find it relatively easier to lose or maintain weights (or, the ones who are willing to go to extremes that most of humanity wouldn’t be) who end up staying in Hollywood, and all the rest of them who struggle with their weight, even in a “normal” way, end up leaving. I can’t count the number of times I’ve read some celebrity interview where so-and-so Famous Person says that they’re “naturally thin” or have “good metabolism.” I certainly know plenty of people in real life who are like that; I wouldn’t be surprised at all to find out those types are over-represented in the entertainment industry.
Oh, blue foods: Concord grapes are blue, aren’t they?
Quirkybook, good point, although I think there are more actors that are willing to torture themselves than naturally thin ones. :-)
As I am writing this there is a news bit being shown on TV of Heidi Klum’s recent photos is an English magazine. The voiceover just said “She is a mother of three, 34 years old and looks THIS amazing! Well, it is strenuous running after three kids and keeping up with her modeling career; that seems to keep her fit.”
Riiiight.
I am sick and tired of us women being told that if we just get our shit together and get our priorities straight then we can look just like [insert celebrity here]. Heidi Klum has stated in interviews that she follows a strict diet and exercise regime; furthermore, she has a nanny who takes care of her children while she works out for two (or more) hours a day. Which normal (working) woman has that?
Quirkybook mentioned Oprah, so I have to comment: she’s gaining again. And I love it. Not in a gloating way, but I really think she looks absolutely marvellous the way she is right now!
But as for not being able to stick to diets and exercise regimes: Oprah’s got a whole bunch of personal people like a chef and a trainer, so if she’s gainging again, this could perhaps be because her body isn’t supposed to be as thin as it was? (And really, the woman is fiftythree years old for crying out loud, she doesn’t have to look thirteen!)
I just hope she will get off the psychological bla bla shows she’s into right now and perhaps adress this “issue”. All of us normal people could benefit from this, I think.
