Glamazing

Perhaps you’ve heard of the Glamazons? They’re currently contestants on America’s Got Talent. Here’s the scoop, per their website:

These song and dance girls prove that the stage is big enough for the most buxom of beauties. Giving you a large, hot helping of bawdy burlesque, striptease, go go dancing and sassy songs…they serve it up with a sexy style all their own. The girls have been described as the plus-size Pussy Cat Dolls.

And here’s the video of their successful audition for the show:

Their performance is great, but the reaction to their performance is the most interesting part to me. (Just the cheer from the crowd as they walk on stage sounds complicated.) Here’s what I got out of this video: a little shock, a little mockery, a little glee, a little “look, the brothers like them!” and a little patronizing. But The Hoff is totally into them, if a little off-base when he contrasts them to “skinny and hot” chicks. And then the fake Simon Cowell admits he is into “curvier girls”:

Ladies, fortunately for you, I am one of those Englishmen who is really into the curvier look. So, I was immediately drawn to your charms, and I thought, ‘if they sing how they look we were in for a bit of a treat.’ And that was a treat.”

Love you, fake Simon. This article goes into more detail about the audition, and seems to suggest that we can vote for them. Is this like American Idol, then? Do we get to vote? My friends, we need to vote for them, they are awesome.

And thanks to Melinda for the links!

Thought you ladies might find this Beth Ditto post interesting, although it begs the question of whether this designer makes clothes in 20W for non-famous people.

Also, get a load of the comments. Mimi Roth much?

America’s Got Talent seems to be all about burlesque this year! I did love Michele L’Amour’s Night Rider burlesque. Not sure the Hoff did though.

Those girls are beautiful. I think any woman who can doll up like that is gorgeous.

I’ve been waiting for MeMe Roth to throw in her two skinny cents, actually. I’m surprised she hasn’t taken advantage of this to media whore her anti-fat agenda.

This is going to seem completely from left field, but I was just in a discussion forum of which I’m a member, and we were actively dissing Lynn Johnston’s comic strip, For Better or For Worse, specifically the fact that in the current storyline, we all knew Anthony wasn’t really interested in his ‘date’, because Lynn drew her as a fat chick. Now that she’s actively encouraging Anthony to pursue Liz at the wedding, one of the members of the forum brilliantly referred to the “not-really-a-date character” as “fatgirl ex machina”, playing off deus ex machina— and my immediate reaction was to love that phrase. Because in theatre, isn’t it usually an angel who appears suddenly and ever-so-conveniently resolves the situation?

I think we could all do with a little fatgirl ex machina, and I hope the Glamazons do well in their roll is unexpected angels appearing rather improbably. I might even be willing to watch the competition just for them, and I hope they do well. I hope American audiences vote for them like mad!

Maggi, you might be interested in this post, then! I love “fatgirl ex machina” though. Hee.

I loved the Glamazons performance on America’s Got Talent, and I thought that while the first response to the group was just as mo pie said, by the time their song was done the audience seemed to be really behind them. I’m hoping they do well, and don’t get too beat up in the process. These reality show/talent contests can get pretty brutal, it seems.

I think they are absolutely beautiful, and I’m happy to see people doing what they want to do, but I guess I’m in the minority about their performance. IMO, it was AWFUL. (sorry)
