fat is not a four letter word

Oh D'Amour

June 10th, 2007

A nice little collection of information on Velvet D’Amour, the infamous 300-pound Jean Paul Gaultier model. Includes clips of her Entertainment Tonight interview, for your convenience. And also, the dress she has on in the first picture is faaaabulous. (Oh, fat girl couture. I wish you, like, existed.) Velvet also did a cool interview with Plus magazine, which you can read here.

The skinny ban is just another prejudice so I don’t particular[ly] agree with it. I don’t believe you can judge people’s health on appearance. I think that models are perceived to be the “icons” of modern health. It’s insane… I think that what people see needs to change. Like who we see as newscasters, interviewers and people at large in media. They should have older people, fat people and not just include people that fit this certain criteria.

I did not appreciate the kudos of beauty when I was thinner. When I was the stunning skinny girl, I passed people waiting on lines at the club and stuff along those lines. I did not realize people were treating me solely on my looks. When I got fatter it was the opposite, I was rejected and lost that power. Having been on both sides of the fence I was able to see how shallow but powerful beauty is.

There are lots of cool pictures of her included with the article (hot). So check it out!

I saw the mention of BUST and thought, “when did we start putting articles online?” But I think you must mean Plus magazine!

I just wanted to say I always appreciate an Erasure reference. Also, Velvet D’amour is the best name I have ever heard in my life, and she just happens to be shockingly gorgeous to boot. I would like to be her, please.

I like what she says at the end of the second ET video–to paraphrase, “Even the thin models, ideals of feminine beauty, aren’t happy with their bodies, so how are non-models supposed to be happy?” That makes so much sense.
