Dove reminds you that it likes you, just as you are

May 5th, 2007

It seems like all I ever post these days are videos but man, once you start looking, you just keep finding great stuff! This great find is thanks to Katio, who writes Sisterskinny.blogspot.com along with her sister Molly. Katieo posted that she can’t watch this video without getting a lump in her throat and I agree, it’s sort of awesome and makes me a little weepy. Yes, these Dove commercials are turning into the Hallmark card commercial of the 00’s, but man, some day one of these little girls is going to be in the Oval Office and it’s going to be because she grew up thinking that she was important, that she could do anything, not in spite of being a girl but because it doesn’t matter if she’s a girl or a boy and that her value isn’t in the size of her ass or how closely she matches society’s vision of beauty, but rather that she’s smart and tough and can make peace like an angel.

Ok, I know that Dove is just doing it to sell soap, but whatever, if a damned soap company has to get us on that road, then fuck yeah, I’ll buy some more Dove. (Actually, they could probably make commercials showing clubbed baby seals and I’d probably buy their body wash anyway, but that’s just me.)

I can’t believe a commercial just made me cry.

When I first saw that ad, I was all emotional too. It’s like, “:’( It’s so true!”

I have to say though, the ad for Diabetes, where the guy says his doctor warned him if he didn’t get treatment, he’d become blind. Then he whips out one of those white canes..it’s like one of those ads where you’re like :O then :’( “He’s blind now!”. That has to be the saddest ad I’ve seen in a long time.

I like the cover of Cyndi Lauper’s “True Colors.” Anyone know who’s singing it?

I love this commercial too – the singer is called Layah Jane

I always cry when I see that commercial. I have a 2 year old daughter, and when I think of all the potential obstacles that might stand in the way of her becoming a smart, independent young woman, it just terrifies me. I think the commerical is beautiful, tho, and an effective reminder for everyone.

This is lovely, ads like these make me not wanna pee when the commercials break is on!
and Dove people are just brilliant for doing this, they’ll be selling a lot of soap indeed.

I hadn’t seen this before. It’s lovely. Even though I know they are just trying to sell soap, this is the greatest way they could have gone about it, if you ask me. So yeah, they sell some soap, but they also get real women out there in the media who obviously feel great about themselves. All of these little girls are amazing and I hope they have someone telling them that every day.

Awww, that video totally made me tear up. All those little girls were so beautiful and it makes me sad that any child should ever think bad things about themselves. Sometimes I really hate the media.

You realise that in India, Dove are selling skin whitening creams with an ad that depicts a father being unable to ’sell off’ his daughter because she’s too dark skinned – then she uses the product, gets a high-flying job and a husband. The video might be floating around on youtube still, or if not, I think I read about it on feministing.com

    Total tear jerker.

I have a thin, blond haired, blue eyed, smart, gymnast daughter……

………..whose only wish in life is to be a brunette.

Are we ever happy? Is it possible?

OMG, bawling like a baby. I had to tell the person who just walked by my desk that I had an allergy attack to explain the red face, tears and runny nose. It’s right in line with my thinking while posting today anyway- sometimes it’s hard to be satisfied with ourselves and show gratitude for what we do have.

Back when I graduated from high school, Nike had an ad that moved me in a similar way. It was about little girls growing up. I cut it out and put it in my scrap book. I still have it. I’ll scan it when I get home and post it on my blog.

    Pasta Queen,
According to YouTube, it’s Layah Jane singing.

Aw, that made even cynical old me tear up. Waah! I used to be all those little girls who thought they were fat and ugly and hated their freckles.

I followed your lead and blogged about this today, too. I hope that you don’t mind. I did find the other vid clip and did give you credit. I am not sure how I am feeling about Dove right now. I need to think about this. But thank you so much!

  15. Rachel, on May 8th, 2007 at 10:02 am Said:

I would like Dove a whole lot more if they would use the same full-figured models they use to hawk anti-cellulite cream in their ads selling products everybody uses, like soap.

Dove’s always lauded for using “normal-sized” women in its “firming cream” ads, but really, why would they use a size 0 supermodel to sell cream for a problem commonly (and erroneously) associated with fat?

Also, Dove’s parent company, UniLever, also owns SlimFast, which has made fortunes off of exploiting women’s insecurities about their bodies.

  16. Erin, on May 9th, 2007 at 12:33 pm Said:

Oh God. When I first saw that commercial, I started crying as soon as the first screen hit with “She hates her freckles,” because obviously I did too when I was a kid and … oh!

I’m with you, Mo. Yes, they’re selling a product but I like that we have a reminder for ourselves out there that we’re the best defense girls have that they don’t have as many of the issues we all did.

    Must. Find. Tissues.
