WAY more fun than a summer in fat camp

Barbie's Fat Friend

April 6th, 2007

I loved the original Hairspray, so I’m actually excited to see the remake, creepy John Travolta drag fat suit notwithstanding. (Michael McKean played Edna Turnblad onstage in San Francisco, and I am still kicking myself for not getting tickets. As it is, I’ve never seen the musical. No idea if it sucks or what. But the John Waters movie is awesome.) Now they’ve released Hairspray action figures, and the star of the film, Nicole Blonsky, is thrilled:

“I think the Tracy and Edna dolls will open a lot of kids’ eyes out there — especially when they are on shelves next to Barbie and the Hilary Duff and Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen dolls. Now girls will have an opportunity to pick a different doll. Because let’s face it, most of us don’t look like the Size 2 shapes we see on TV. You can have just as much fun with Tracy and Edna — if not even more.”

Tragically, Amber von Tussle’s doll has a way cuter outfit than Tracy’s. Damn that Amber von Tussle.

How cute! Does anyone remember the Body Shop ads a few years back that featured a naked, plus-sized Barbie-style doll? The Tracy doll reminds me of those ads, only sassy and with a teased ‘do.

Here’s an enormous picture of all the dolls!

Is it just because I think the Tracy doll is cutely plump, or are Amber vanTussel’s doll arms skeletally thin?

They are cute, but it kind of makes me long for dolls based on the actors in the original movie. Wouldn’t it be great to have a Divine-as-Edna-Turnblad doll?

A Ricki Lake and Divine doll from the original Hairspray would have been fabulous. I would own those until I die. I love the original movie since I saw it when I was 10. The only question for me is which doll to ask for, Tracy or Edna.
